VHS : Life Is Sweet
The story focuses on a family that lives in the outskirts of London where they try to make the most of the life. Andy, the father, works as a supervisor for a large kitchen and he hates his job. Andy is a dreamer that often does not get things done, but always starts countless new tasks as he has aspirations to start something new. The mother, Wendy, works as a clerk in a small boutique that sells children's clothing and she teaches physical education in an elementary school. Through a friend ... Read More:

For me one of the most engaging moments in the film is when Gilbert, played by Broadbent, encounters Japanese Kendo fighting and especially Japanese theater. This is set up as a prelude to suggesting that an exhibition of Japanese culture Gilbert attends starts him off thinking up the Mikado. Whatever the intentions Broadbent's reactions as the camera focuses on his reactions to the unfolding drama in the play demonstrate in a completely convincing way how a Victorian Londoner would react to a (Noh?) ... VHS : Secrets & Lies
Mike Leigh's film won Best Picture at the Cannes Film Festival. A young black woman decides to find her birth-mother only to discover her mother is white, just one among many of the SECRETS & LIES of this tale. A first-rate cast delivers knock-out performances. A bit on the long side, the film has both drama and comical moments, with a healthy helping of tenderness. The DVD has a good quality transfer of the widescreen original but no bonus features apart from the trailer (and a few other trailers). A first ... Read More:

After his volcanic, emotional, wonderful "Secrets and Lies," Mike Leigh decided to keep it simple and straightforward, at least on the surface, with this film "Career Girls." On closer inspection though, "Career Girls" is equally as emotionally open and character driven as its predecessor of just one year before.
"Career Girls" is a film of recollection and remembrance: not always fond nor happy but like all recalled events and relationships one filled with equal parts pride, regret and embarrassment. Hannah ( an equally ... Read More:

VHS : All Or Nothing (2002) (Ws Dol)
Everything about this movie is depressing of the lowest order. The background is set in a housing project of three main families. Timothy Spall's character is a taxi driver whilst his partner is a counter lady for Safeway. Both of them have a dejected daughter who works as a cleaner in a retirement home whose work colleague is a lonely & sad old man who suggests to go out with her, a lazy & obese son who only cares to eat, watch TV & fighting with other children whole day long. Timothy is an disillusioned taxi driver who himself is less than ... Read More:

"What's it like being you?"- A classic line if ever there was one.

You have probably never seen a movie quite like Naked. It begins with a random rape scene and it ends..., well let's just say it doesn't so much end, as the movie finishes.

Naked gives you a tour of the dark underbelly of London as seen through the eyes of Johnny, an anti-hero if there ever was one. An intellectual who is on the run from.., life? the law? his own demons? You can't really say.

The dialogue is fascinating, the scenes bleak as you view the desolation ... Read More:

I absolutely love this movie/play. I once saw a very good stage production in New York, but nothing beats seeing Alison Steadman playing the monstrous Beverly ruling her roost.

It's a not-terribly-kind portrayal of suburban angst and tension among the classes in Britain circa the Queen's Jubilee.

Every scene boils with subtext, and you are gripping your seat wondering how this tinderbox will explode.

Very black comedy, and very astute about the rage and pain that lies behind those suburban doors.

The soundtrack on this film is truly horrible... HOWEVER, I did find that by adjusting the balance completely to the right, I was able to hear just the dialogue, without the dreadful, invasive sound effects track getting in the way. The DVD is unwatchable unless you do this!

10.Hard Labour starring: Liz Smith, Clifford Kershaw, Polly Hemingway, Bernard Hill, Alison Steadman

VHS : Hard Labour
A classic BBC Play For Today from the days when televsion still provided a forum for this sort of comment, one that directly screamed at its audience in defiance. Hard Labour is chiefly noticeable for an excellent cast and several superbly staged scenes. Clifford Kershaw turns in a very different performance to his usual lonely old man role. Two of the finest scenes are the love scene and the clocking on at work. The "Love scene" is really anything but, as Jim returns drunk and unbearably loudly undresses while his wife sleeps. Then he forcefully has sex with her. Leigh's brilliance comes in ... Read More:
