Having seen this gem in college, in a cinematography class, I will never forget it. Possibly one of Voigt's best ever. Compare this character to the part he played in "Enemy of the State" and you'll be amazed at the spectrum of his acting skills. The only thing BAD about this movie is the administrator character who is an evil person. I think he was played by Hume Cronyn. But his performance, too, is outstanding. I saw this just recently on one of the oldies networks like AMC. And I was able ... Read More:

Paul Newman and Sidney Poitier play US expatriates ,both jazz musicians, living and working in Paris .Newman is in Paris because he feels more able to grow musically in a European environment while Poitier is escaping racial prejudice in the US .They meet two US tourists and pair off together ,Newman with Joanne Woodward and Poityier with Diahann Carroll .Cue much -frankly rather dull-discourse between the couples in bars ,cafes etc and frequent leisurely perambulations around the city in which they talk(my how they ... The various blanket infringements on the rights of American citizens and others since the criminal events of 9/11 hardly represent the first time that the American government has seen fit to curtail those rights. The Palmer Raids roundup of reds, radicals and foreigners in the aftermath of the Russian Revolution at the tail end of World War I comes to mind. As done the subject of this film, the red scare against communist and other labor radicals after World War II with the onset of the Cold War against the Soviet Union, a former ally. ... Read More:

I adored this film. But I must confess some personal bias here--first, because I've had a crush on Peter Coyote for most of my adult life (though his role here is definitely supporting, not major), and second, because my personal life parallels what Rawlings experienced--though I came to a mountain (with a creek) to do my writing. Rip Torn's performance as Marsh Turner is just stellar--one of the best things I've ever seen him do. And Alfre Woodard 'becomes' Gee Chee in a realistic but not over-the-top portrayal of her character. Really, ... Read More:

This is a great film with great acting, that holds up better today than it probably did when it was made. American audiences must have been put off by a murderous, rapist lead in Paul Newman's Carrasco. Ritt is a very fine director and in this and other films, works with James Wong Howe, one of the most underated cinematographers of the 50's and 60's. Howe's camerawork is brilliant in this film, but hard to see because MGM/Warner has never released the widescreen version of the film. We are left with a shoddy pan and scan version which only ... It's an interesting story of what happened during the time of the coal barrons and how horribly the miners were treated. However, it seriously lacks any excitement and I found myself wondering when it was going to end. I love the cast, but I really think the director could have made better use of their talent.

This is one of Newmans best, because he plays a completely dispicable

person with no redeeming qualities. He has no scruples and no character.

It is a great departure for Newman and he does a Great job.

I've wanted to get the CD not the DVD. Buyer's mistake. I decided to keep it because I like Michael Jackson. I'm sure this DVD will do it justice, so I decided to keep it.
