This tragic coming-of-age tale (filmed in French) is an all-time classic that took forever to make it to DVD because of a longstanding family squabble. Unlike the seemingly ancient VHS version (only 20 years old, but film decomp makes it look like WWII newsreel footage), the digital transfer solves sound and visual problems -- especially the subtitles, which were annoying oversized in the original. As for the plot -- it's long, like the movie, but in a nutshell: Jewish boy goes to German school pretending ... Read More:

Magnificent? May be it can be a word to define it. A bunch of great actors get together around a worn table in a decrepit and abandoned theater. They start a play. They are all dressed as you or me would be. They have no make-up. But they have themselves.

And in minutes they capture you; they inmerse you in the Chekhov's world. They show you art in its more elevated sense.

This is Vanya on 42nd Steet.

I too would like to see this movie on DVD. I saw it on TV several times in past years, and enjoy the thought of Amy Madigan and Ed Harris starring together in a romantic movie, while they are man and wife in real life. They are both excellent actors, and I would love to have this in my DVD collection

VHS : Atlantic City
As Lou, an almost prissily natty numbers runner certain that everything - even the ocean - has deteriorated, Burt Lancaster gives the performance of his life in Louis Malle's Canadian-financed film Atlantic City (opening today at the Imperial).

It might be fairer to call the picture a John Guare film, for Malle, best known in Ontario as the director of the unseen Pretty Baby, has entered entirely into his gifted playwright's episodic, jazzy view of the universe - Guare's script for Atlantic City is a commodious comic ... Read More:

VHS : Pretty Baby (1978)
Very few movies are truly works of art. This is one of them. There are no explosions that throw bodies through the air, no sensational car crashes, no severed human limbs. Rather there is a plot that unfolds on its own good time, well drawn characters, excellently written dialogue, perfect atmosphere, and gorgeous photography.

Still, I understand why some might find the film objectionable. There is nudity, even nudity of a pubescent girl. There is open talk of sex. And some quasi moralists are more offended by that than ... Read More:

VHS : Zazie Dans Le Metro
Louis Malle's visual sense of humor is wonderful in Zazie, and he seems to have brought off a stylistic translation of Queneau's linguistic sophistication into the visual - since it clearly couldn't be done reasonably in dialogue. I loved the cartoon-parodies (talking Bugs and Wile E. here) and the silliness all-around, with visual and kinetic wit. I've only looked over the beginning of the book in English translation (also impossible); rather different from the film, but vive le difference! (BTW scant traces of C. Demongeot on the Internet except ... Read More:

[BEWARE SPOILERS]

I don't know whether I've ever watched a film in which I identified more with all the characters than I did in this emotionally wrenching masterwork from the late, great Louis Malle. It is part of the genius of Malle to, like Shakespeare, make every character real and to see and present the depth of even those slightly off stage.

I could begin with the youngest, the daughter Sally (Gemma Clarke) who says little and is always at a slight distance, her serious face in the backseat of the car seemingly thinking dark thoughts, ... Read More:
