VHS : Ken Burns Presents The West (Boxed Set)
When some people use the word "documentary" they seem to imbue it with an expectation of total objectivity--as if one could eliminate all traces of cultural experience from one's makeup and discover a shining path of ultimate "truth" simply by the act of becoming a filmmaker. Nonsense. We are all a product of our times and of the culture in which we were raised and educated. Documentaries are always, always, always selective. There is no such thing as total objectivity, either in writing or in filmmaking. ... Read More:

The DVD was informative and engaging. Burns utilizes the most compelling narrators and resources to substatiate his effort. His history becomes dramatic, multi-faceted, and memorable.

I don't know if it is because it wasn't just Ken Burns or what but it wasn't A+ like his most of his other works. It left out some details that seemed needed for the story. I own most all of Ken Burns work but this is one I just rented and didn't buy.

VHS : Not for Ourselves Alone - The Story of Elizabeth Cady Stanton & Susan B. Anthony
It would be totally inadequate for this reviewer to say that NOT FOR OURSELVES ALONE:The Story of Elizabeth Cady Stanton & Susan B. Anthony is simply a "must-see","well done","moving","dramatic","compelling"etc.etc. documentary of the two forgers of the early Woman's Suffrage Movement. This Ken and Paul Burns treatise has been so carefully, sensitively and lovingly handled, crafted and assembled that I was moved to anger, incredulity, sympathy, action and finally to just good ol'tears!
NOT FOR OURSELVES ALONE tells in vivid detail, ... Read More:

VHS : Mark Twain - A Film Directed by Ken Burns
This is a fantastic biographical film about Mark Twain, really Samuel Clemens. It covers everything from his birth to his death. This man, considered to be one of America's greatest humorists, suffered a lot of personal grief - some of it by his own doing. The film is typical of Ken Burn's style; very engrossing, very long, and always worth the time.

VHS : Empire of the Air - The Men Who Made Radio
I was deeply saddened by the total ommission of Nikola
Tesla from this show about the radio. It is inconceivable that not once is the guy who actually invented wireless mentioned. Very shoddy research.
Tesla was awarded all of the patents that Marconi
had tried to steal from Tesla, and as everyone knows,
Lee Deforest was a hack and who basically
stole most of his ideas from Armstrong.
Thank God Burns didn't do a show about Edison being a genius or I would have had a stroke.

9.Huey Long starring: Huey Long, Russell Long, David McCullough, Arthur Schlesinger Jr., I.F. Stone

VHS : Ken Burns' America - Thomas Hart Benton
What is remarkable is what a cohesive story this truly comprehensive bio of THB makes. As all documentarians do, Burns clearly had to help along/trace out the narrative thread, but the brilliance of this particular film is that the story of it just seems to emerge on its own.

Also, the story of THB's death is particularly moving. The entire film is a great intro to THB and is accessible for any audience. Even those who feel distanced from the "aloof" world of art will really enjoy this film. This film opened my eyes to actually appreciate art. Previously ... Read More:
