VHS : Laurel & Hardy: Bohemian Girl / Below Zero
Though "Swiss Miss" was among Laurel and Hardy's weaker features, it contained several vintage sequences. Unfortunately, the same cannot be said about "The Bohemian Girl" (1936) - a dour comic opera with few highlights. What worked so beautifully in "Fra Diavolo" falls flat this time around. The Stan and Ollie characters remain submerged in the operetta's unrelenting heaviness. After her mysterious death, Thelma Todd's final screen role was severely truncated in post-production, which didn't help ... Read More:

It's already been well-covered as to plot, deficiencies, etc. by other reviewers. So I will just say that, bogged down though it may be with a dreadful and forgettable romance that has little bearing on our boys, the merits far outweigh the slight defects. The 'Hundred Pipers' dance segment counts with their best, the bungled forced-suicide of Stanley's, ditto (Out of our sight, the gun goes off, but Stanley is revealed to be still standing; "What happened?" asks Ollie. "I missed," Stan replies tearfully.)Hard ... Read More:

VHS : Laurel & Hardy: Way Out West
Way Out West is generally regarded as Laurel and Hardy's best feature film.Next to Sons Of The Desert. It is the only other L&H film to be a Stan Laurel Production(the other being Our Relations from a year earlier).Definetly one of my favourite L&H films. Not a dull moment in the movie.Rarely do we actually see Stan laugh. Not only is this one of their films where Oliver sings beautifully, but Stan also sings with a cartoonish trick voice. There are a lot of special effects in this movie as well.Such as Stan igniting his thumb, the ... The gang gets together to devise a plan to get this Miss Crabtree by bringing in ants, itching powder, and even a mouse. On the way to school, Jackie hitches a ride with a beautiful blonde woman and tells her all of his plans for the day. What a bad move that was; the beautiful blonde is Miss Crabtree. She is hurt by the news that her students already hate her, especially since she planned to give them ... Read More:

VHS : Laurel & Hardy: Big Business (Silent)

A get-even, escalation.

Very funny. Not just music. Planned so you follow the action, just by watching, at a quick pace. Builds the plot for a couple minutes, then takes off, at ever increasing speed. Only 20-minutes, seems like 5-minutes. Better than a talkie. Laurel & Hardy's best (I have seen them all).

Laurel & Hardy's silent, "Soup to Nuts" is also good. Both available on DVD, for a lot more money: "The Lost Films of Laurel and Hardy" ("Big Business" is in volume-1).

Other good silent films ... Read More:

Because all the reviewers that have written about " College " here before have done the job this doesn't want to be a review of my own. The lines that comes next are a translation to english of an excerpt from a review that the surrealist spanish filmmaker Luis Buñuel wrote in 1927 about this movie. For everyone who hasn't read it, here comes:

" Here's Buster Keaton with his most recent film, the splendid " College ". Asepsis. Disinfection. Freed from tradition our gaze revels in the youthful, tempered world of Buster, the great specialist in ... Read More:
