VHS : Kitchen Toto
As someone who grew up in Kenya in the 50s and 60s, I can attest to the fact that this film captures the feel and the spirit of colonial Kenya better than any other film ever made. The characterizations are excellent, and the story is both entirely believable and captures the nature of colonialism without being judgemental. The little boy in the lead role does an excellent job - you can fully empathize with him - and the late Bob Peck is, as ever, superb in the role of the local head of the police. ... Read More:

VHS : The Last of His Tribe
In the early 1900's, one of the last of the free-ranging Indians is caught raiding a slaughterhouse for food. It turns out, he's the last of the Yahi tribe. Dr. Alfred Kroeber (Voight) befriends the man who they name Ishi (Graham Greene). Kroeber refuses the offers of the BIA, the last of the "Wild Indian" branch, who offers to repatriate Ishi to Oklahoma and a reservation.

The story's a strongly moving tale based on a true-life event. This is perhaps Voight and Greene's best acting ... Read More:

VHS : Lord of the Flies (1990)
This movie version of "Lord of the Flies" is a prime example of how a screenwriter can completely destroy a classic novel.

This movie is a major disappointment . So many liberties are taken with the plot that one might say that the book and the movie are shadows of each other. I've taught this book in English class for about twenty years on and off, (Mostly off) and this year decided to show the modern version rather than the outstanding black and white sixties version.

Big mistake. ... Read More:

VHS : Robert Louis Stevenson's St Ives
St. Ives is a pleasant, light hearted diversion. I'm a big fan of costume /adventure drama, with lots of duelling. This is well cast, with Anna Friel a lovely young actress I havn't seen a lot of in the past, and Richard E Grant stealing every scene, with his sly humour, and sending up his Scarlet Pimpernal image at every opportunity. Not much in the way of a serious duelling sequence to highlight the clash of the good guy/bad guy big finish, but Peter Diamond staged a couple of brief Skirmishs, and Jason Evers is always a seriously good bad guy, ...
