VHS : P. D. James - Devices and Desires, Vol. 1 - 6
Devices and Desires is set in a picturesque English cove - save the massive nuclear power plant station contaminating the view. Dalgleish is there to sort out his inheritance from a recently deceased aunt who had lived there. However, he encounters an odd variety of people, some very likable, others despicable, and quite a few holding deep, dark secrets.

First of all, there is the problem of The Whistler, a serial killer who whistles a hymn while strangling his victims. He has already ... Read More:

It seems this movie has gotten a lot of negative reviews by the critics, and it has passed into Forgotten-Movie-Oblivion as far as rentals go, or even as far as people's memories have gone.

I saw this movie about 15 years ago, and thought it was pretty darn funny. Not hilarious, but funny. It was bizarre in that brilliant Python-esqe way. It is loaded with British humor the way they do it best. Throw a polite, sensible, English chap into an extremely horrible and embarassing situation, and ... Read More:

An adaptation more faithful to the original book you will not find. This wistfully acted, beautifully photographed British television production of Anita Brookner's Booker Prize winning novel is a delight to watch over and over again to pick up on nuances perhaps overlooked in a single viewing. Anna Massey, here middle-aged (remember her as Tom Courtenay's young victim in Michael Powell's Peeping Tom?) is perfectly cast as Edith, a romance writer who knows her market and who is in self-imposed exile ... VHS : Silas Marner
This 1985 BBC production of Silas Marner is pretty loyal to Mary Ann Evan's (i.e. George Eliot's) novel "Silas Marner: The Weaver of Raveloe." I had to read the novel "Silas Marner" in 10th grade English. While I do not remember all of the minor details of the novel, I do not recall this BBC production missing any of the major characters or elements of plot.

I also have always enjoyed watching videos starring Ben Kingsley (ex: Oliver Twist, Gandhi, Schindler's List). While Silas Marner seldom ... Read More:

Translating a lengthy book to the movie screen is never easy, but this adaptation captures the essence of the story and the times. The scenery chosen and the costumes are great, while the cast is filled with familiar faces you love to see (Peter O'Toole, Joanna Lumley, Susan Hampshire, David McCallum, Penelope Keith). The indepth details/characterizations of the book may be missing - time alone would dictate that - nevertheless, the cast draws you into the story. Like a good book, you don't want to put it down....but ... Read More:

It's all a bit dated, sadly - the sort of TV drama we used to see a lot of, but don't get made now; and watching this you can see why. It's all a bit predictable and slow. Still, to be fair, most of the acting is top notch (Colin Firth, Timothy Spall, James Wilby in particular, although the usually excellent Bill Paterson is something of a hammy characature). I know it's a period piece, but it's also a little hard to believe that 18-year old boys as this naive and awkward, even those with a sheltered public school upbringing. ... Read More:

The reader will not need to trawl through too many reviews about Giles Foster's 1994 adaptation of Joanna Trollope's (b.1943) novel of the same name before he or she realizes that there is considerable disagreement about the merits and flaws of this production.

Anyway, without giving too much away, the essence of the main plot is thus; Anna is the Rev Peter Boverie's apparently long-suffering wife. She is in her early forties. Increasingly, Anna discerns that she has become, over the twenty years or so of their 'togetherness', ... Read More:

VHS : Northanger Abbey (1986)
Sorry, I know this was shot in 1986, but I don't remember the rest of the films shot that year being THIS technically terrible. The bad effects and film quality are so distracting, it actually makes the movie almost laughable. Not a good quality in any film, let alone a period piece.

I'm not as familiar with this Jane Austen work as some of her others, but if her leading lady is as dreamy as portrayed here with so much internal fantasizing going on, you're going to need a special director to pull it off. I assume she was meant to be portrayed ... Read More:

Ah.... HALLMARK HOME ENTERTAINMENT, the production company of clean boring stories for the family! Sorry, but with so many other versions of THE PRINCE AND THE PAUPER done over the years, this production for all of it's star power (Alan Bates, Aidan Quinn and Jonathan Hyde) is rather generic and ultimately unsatisfying. The screenplay is pretty choppy and cuts through alot of the book in order to make the 90 minute deadline required to fit in all of the advertisers.Aidan Quinn is SO much better than this. His role as the king's protector, Miles Hendon, is pretty ... Read More:
