| This movie is 60's classic. I notice the last post on this forum was in 2000! Here it is 2008 and still no DVD! I agree with the majority of reviewers that the junk that is out on DVD is just that...junk. We don't want these classics to be forgotten. Copy it to DVD before the next iteration of technology emerges. |

I saw this film in 1962 just days after returning from a tour of Italy. While not a classic film by any means, I was totally won over and was back in Italy again. Whenever I watch it and listen to Max Steiner's wonderful score I can practically smell Rome. It was titled 'Lovers Must Learn' here in the UK, and was never released on VHS here. | I read the original novel by Earl Hamner Jr. soon after it was published in 1961, but I somehow missed the 1963 movie until now. This is a fine film, heartwarming in an old way without being cliched. It's easy to understand how it inspired "The Waltons" television series, which drew on the novel's characters and its portrayal of American values.
The transfer of the movie's setting from Appalachia to the Grand Tetons surprised this reader of the novel. James MacArthur was too old to play ... Read More: |

This is one of the better historical films made about the war in the Pacific. and the 'thirties and 'forties aviation navy. I was in naval aviation near the time this was written about, and know the aircraft depicted. The depictions are accurate; one of the rare movies not to throw in the wrong airplane in a battle scene. A war correspondent in post in Russia after the WW2, falls in love and marries with a Russian ballet dancer. When he writes an unpleasant comment against the sensible epidermis of the government, he is considered non grate citizen and expulsed from Russia, but she will be detained. This is a very enjoyable and entertaining movie set in the gold mining west, but to my knowledge it has yet to be released to DVD. Four o'clock western theatre on TNT used to show it frequently in the mid 1990s, and more recently, this month (September, 2008) in fact, ENCORE westerns is showing it several times.
