VHS : Student Prince (1954)
I was dragged to this movie as a young boy. What young man wants to see a movie with a singing prince and a love story? It didn't take long for me to enjoy the story of male bonding by singing and drinking in the beer garden soon to be followed by a sword fight.
I can almost imagine myself serenading the beautiful and sexy barmaid (Ann Bylthe), especially with the flawless voice from GOD(Mario Lanza) lip-synced to near perfection by the prince(Edmund Purdom).
All this plus an arrogant ... Read More:

VHS : A Stolen Life (1946)

saludos

... I didn't feel he was really into his performance in this movie, the way he was in 'Scaramouche'. This movie, for me, was just 'okay', not horrible, not great, just somewhere in between. I own this movie, and I will watch it again, but I must say I'm not in any particular hurry to do so. I would like for the 2006 James Purefoy version to show up on dvd. As for this version, I imagine it will be on dvd once Purefoy's version comes out.

Part of my problem with this movie is (and it is not the movie's ... Read More:

4.Merry Widow (1952) starring: Lana Turner, Fernando Lamas, Una Merkel, Richard Haydn, Thomas Gomez
directed by: Curtis Bernhardt

VHS : Merry Widow (1952)
Just 'burned' the two versions of the Merry Widow off TCM - the earlier B&W McDonald/Chevalier film is the superior one by far; however, this updated color version w/ attractive co-stars (Turner & Lamas) is much better than I expected; the production is lavish which is typical for 'musicals' of the time - Turner is gorgeous, as usual & Lamas much better than I expected - certainly worth a watch, but try to see the other film as a comparison!

5.Kisses for My President (B&W) starring: Fred MacMurray, Polly Bergen, Eli Wallach, Arlene Dahl, Edward Andrews
directed by: Curtis Bernhardt

VHS : Kisses for My President (B&W)
Most of the scripting in this movie is really dated, but Polly Bergen does a good job with the material which she had to work with. Of course, this owes to the fact that she is an awesome actor to begin with.

Fred MacMurray gives an equally compelling role as the First Gentleman. Frankly, since he was playing a role which was actually disparaged when this film was made (the idea of a dominant wife/subservient husband was-then scandalous) he deserves additional kudos for having to 'climb uphill'. His character has ... Read More:

The sound quality of my VHS copy is fine (and believe me, I'm hard to please in that area). Yes, this movie belongs on DVD in Dolby 5.1.

The story is so good, you'll swear it is fiction. But it isn't. A country girl from the Australian outback who becomes a world-famous opera singer? Come on! But it's all true.

The first half of the movie is her struggle and rise. From sneaking off the ranch to an audition (of which her father vehemently disapproves) to her scholarship to study singing in Paris ... Read More:

7.Conflict (1945) starring: Humphrey Bogart, Alexis Smith, Sydney Greenstreet, Rose Hobart, Charles Drake
directed by: Curtis Bernhardt

VHS : Conflict (1945)
Well to do engineer Richard Mason played by the venerable Humphrey Bogart has a perplexing problem in the rather average film noir "Conflict". He is desperately in love with Evelyn Turner played by the fetching Alexis Smith. Unfortunately he's married to her older sister Katherine played by Rose Hobart.

So desperate is Bogey that while recovering from an auto accident suffered when returning home from an anniversary party thrown for him by family friend, psychologist Dr. Mark Hamilton played by a slightly less corpulent Sydney Greenstreet, ... Read More:

8.Sirocco starring: Humphrey Bogart, Lee J. Cobb, Märta Torén, Everett Sloane, Gerald Mohr
directed by: Curtis Bernhardt
August 06, 1996
Average Rating: out of 5 stars

VHS : Sirocco
Bogart seemed destined for a painful end as he plied his despicable trade in a tale set in French-occupied Damascus around 1925...

Casting his lot between the French and Syrians, depending upon which suits his own greedy plan most profitably, he earns the enmity of both sides...

There were good supporting performances by Lee J. Cobb, thumping his desk as usual as a French colonel, and Everett Sloane as a volatile general, but the film was of little consequence and a sorry end to Bogart's solo production credits...

"Sirocco" ... Read More:

9.Possessed (1947) starring: Joan Crawford, Van Heflin, Raymond Massey, Geraldine Brooks, Stanley Ridges
directed by: Curtis Bernhardt
September 01, 1998
Average Rating: out of 5 stars
>>More Details
VHS : Possessed (1947)
POSSESSED (1947) is a somewhat underrated Warner Bros. film noir! With an
excellent central performance from its star Joan Crawford this highly charged drama should be better thought of than it is and deserving of much
more exposure. It is one of Crawford's best pictures so this overdue
release on DVD is something of an event.

Crawford, fresh from winning an Acadamy Award for "Mildred Pierce" looked
as if she was trying for another one here and was even nominated for her well measured portrayal of a neurotic private nurse in the employ ... Read More:

Miss Sadie Thompson

This movie is well worth watching, if only for Rita Hayworth's fabulous, "The Heat is On" dance number. But I don't understand why it's not available on DVD, given that "Trouble in Texas," "Charlie Chan in Egypt" and a few of her other, early, and not as interesting films, are. I'd also like to see "Tonight and Every Night" on DVD as well. That film has some great dance sequences. Given how little Rita was allowed to produce in her best years, at least Sony/Columbia Pictures ought to produce the better ones in current technology. My own view is that ... Read More:
