| This is one of the most harrowing films I have ever seen. Based on real situations, and written by a man who lived through them (as Lockhart), the film, and of course more so the book, depict the Battle of the Atlantic from a relatively unspectacular viewpoint.
Having read the book before seeing the film undoubtedly helps, but the level of acting and direction really portrays the situations, and latent fear inherent amongst the battle's participants. My wife has only seen the film, and she effected by it. Read More: |

| I'd like to add my voice to that of the others who are hoping for a widescreen DVD release of this excellent film. It was available that way some years ago on laserdisc and it looked great. Heston, Cooper and Harris work extremely well together; the model work is better than average for its time; the tank shots feature some of the most convincing water/storm effects ever put on film. | For want of trying to avoid a little girl two stories emerge. Helen (Gwyneth Paltrow) either catches or misses a train. The two stories then interweave as both Helens interact with many of the same characters. She has a boyfriend who is unfaithful (and is something of a wretch to boot) and she meets and dates a man who is her soulmate. | This is without a doubt my favorite book and movie. Watch the movie at least twice each year and never grow tired of the magnificnet writing. Wanted so much for "Mrs Bone" to love her Attorney, which she did, but not in the way he

| A 6 yr old "highly energetic" boy and a 9 year old "sophisticated" girl were both riveted by this beautiful film. Unique adventures, sympathetic characters and a fabulous location make this faithful rendering of Arthur Ransome's book a joy to watch.
