VHS : My Neighbor Totoro
I remember watching this movie when it frist came out and simply being at awe with it. No bad guys ... little girls and fuzzy monsters ... come one, how can that beat Akira? Well, it just does. It's been my favorite move for years and now it's my daughter's favorite movie too.

I think the thing that gets me the most is Myazaki's treatment of the parents. When the children tell them of ghosts and monsters, there's instant belief ... no pats on the head followed by "silly girls" ... ... Read More:

VHS : Odd Obsession
One of Ichikawa's first films, marred by a bad ending. Four characters are involved in a strange menage-a-quatre: an aging man who has high blood pressure and is worried about his virility; his dutiful wife; a young doctor he "uses" as an aprodisiac; and his daughter who becomes jealous of her mother.

The old man decides that seeing his wife dally with another man (the doctor) excites him, makes him feel younger; he talks her into continuing her philandering while he looks on. This "excitement" eventually ... Read More:

VHS : The Sun's Burial
This is a really good film once you get used to the charcters and understand a little about Oshima. There are definitely no heroes here. But you come to admire Hanako's tenacious struggle to survive in the changing underworld of Osaka. What sticks with you afterwards is the incredible beauty of the shots which always seem to take place at dawn or dusk when the sky looks incredible. Combined with the bleak industrial landscape of the city, its haunting.

This is my second favorite Oshima film, my favorite being Death ... Read More:

This movie was advertised as a light comedy but it is,in fact a profound view of the average life of many within the Janese society still trying to find themselves in a whole new world. What was not previously mentioned is a scene when a Japanese opera star sings Silent Night and another that has drunken bar goers try to sing Auld Lang Sang, however spelled. The storyline is one matter, peek at daily life in an era we have seldom ... Read More:
