| TALL TALE has the potential to be an excellent film. The possibilities of a tall tale adventure with Pecos Bill, Calamity Jane, Paul Bunyan, and John Henry should be great. This isn't.
The two stars I gave it are for two performances that head and pretty good cast and the music by Randy Edelmen (the genius behind GETTYSBURG's score). | Liberty: The American Revolution has great depth of information, but it's a little too much for junior high age students. Unfortunately we bought the DVD from Fot Records who will not allow returns if the package has been opened without penalizing the buyer a hefty 80%!

| This is a great movie if you like political intrigue, action and suspense, and if you're a fan of Donald Sutherland and Charlie Sheen. This movie is almost more relevant today than it was when it was made. Great cast and attention-getting, creative plot, with its fair share of twists and turns. If you've never seen this movie, you should! |

| The Hard Way scores as a hyper-deranged double satire, taking on spoiled-rotten Hollywood and the macho lunacy of buddy-cops flicks. There's a ton of smart dialogue amid the cusswords, NY is shot briliantly through a grimy lens (and LA through a glittering lens), a bar scene between Fox and Woods deconstructs a century of gender roles in the movies, and even the car chases/crashes are parodies.

| Neither fans nor detractors seem to have a clue what this movie is about. The best window on the theme is Tierney's statement. Everyone does deals, gives and takes favors. That's not a lamentable fact of urban life. It's the reality for social creatures. That's enobling and tragic, and all of Sayles characters are in it. All except the autistic guy, who can only parrot another's cry for help. A brilliant explication of a fundamental truth of human existence. |

| When it comes to the "serial killer genre," I suppose Michael Mann's 1986 film "Manhunter" began it all. One could argue for Richard Fleischer's superb The Boston Strangler in 1968, but no matter. Mann's tight and stylish version of Thomas Harris's novel Red Dragon is a thoroughly fascinating work. To this day, I recall the terror felt during the early sequence when Will Graham (William Petersen) investigates the blood-soaked crime scene alone, practically whispering his version of the events into a tape recorder.
