| Chuck in fine form as a crusty sodbuster but a bit dour throughout. Earnest performances help carry it along but it's not quite entertainment, is it ? I don't think I can recommend buying it but should prove a worthwhile curiosity as a Wednesday night rental. |

This is a very enjoyable movie for western buffs of the mid-1960's before Hollywood forgot 'how' to make good westerns. The cast is sensational comprised of many seasoned and well known actors with one of my all time favorites, George Peppard, turning in a strong performance. George has the role of a man forced to take a hand literally in a battle for a town, one with which he tried to avoid. | Confounding expectation, Peckinpah's follow up to "The Wild Bunch" is a broad comedy. The humour is on a pretty juvenile level though and a scene in the middle where a drunken priest (David Warner) consoles a grieving woman is particularly idiotic and demeaning to women (one could write a whole thesis about Peckinpah's misogyny and generally warped attitude to women). Despite this, Peckinpah does recreate the atmosphere of an old Western town and extends the boundaries of the Western genre. |
