One of the things which makes this film so remarkable is the script, as other reviewers have noted. Perhaps the humour and pacing might be better understood if it were realised that Dodie Smith scripted the movie -- the writer to I Capture the Castle and The 101 Dalmatians. She was living in the States at the time to escape the bombing of England during WW2, and this was one of her projects. An amazing script, performed brilliantly by the likes of Ray Milland, Ruth Hussey and the radiant (and ultimately ... Read More:

I so totally disagree with all the glowing reviews. There was no suspense for me whatsoever! First off, the characters were types and were never fully developed, never even slightly developed actually. Ray Milland who is a great actor put on a smirkly fake I love you face at the start and left it at that. There was no way to hate him or love him, all you could do was try not to fall asleep. Grace Kelly was ok, but mostly just good looking. That guy who played her boyfriend reminded me of someone from a beach ... Read More:

This is an action-filled movie that gains momentum when the three brothers leave their family and join the French Foreign Legion together in a wave of disgust over their father's weaknesses. The brotherly affection and loyalty is the main theme of the story, and it is touching and heartrending without being overly sentimental. Cooper, Milland, Hayward and Donleavy are brilliant. It was, is, and always will be a great film about true nobility of the heart as opposed to nobility of the blood.

A must see if you are a baseball fan or a fan of comedy and wonderful endings. The only thing that would make it better is if it were on DVD.

Beautiful Susan Applegate (Ginger Rogers) is tired of New York where she constantly has to compromise her morality just to get along. She decides to return home and goes to the train station to purchase a ticket. Unfortunately, the rates have gone up. Angry but not beaten, she dons a costume very much like that of a little girl and convinces an innocent bystander to buy her a half fare ticket. Off she goes, but the conductor isn't convinced she's under twelve. She escapes into a man's quarters, Major Philip Kirby's (Ray Milland), and he ... Read More:

VHS : Reap the Wild Wind
Paulette Goddard was the frontrunner to play Scarlett O'Hara in "Gone with the Wind" until Vivien Leigh pipped her at the post. Four years later, Goddard finally got the chance to play another firebrand Southern belle in Cecil B. DeMille's REAP THE WILD WIND, a costume adventure with the emphasis on costume--and filmed in glowing early Technicolor.

Goddard plays Loxi Claiborne, the feisty manager of a ship salvage company in 1840s Key West, Florida. Loxi falls in love with Captain Jack Stuart (John Wayne); but later finds herself caught ... Read More:

VHS : Ministry of Fear
Fritz Lang was one of the greatest directing talents to ever emerge from German cinema. Born in Vienna, he migrated to Berlin following service in World War One and became one of Germany's premier directors.

When Hitler came to power, however, Lang found himself at a potentially deadly crossroad. He was summoned by Joseph Goebbels, the Third Reich's infamous Director of Propaganda, and was offered the position of becoming the regime's head of filmmaking.

The sagacious director knew a trap when he saw it. He was aware that the Nazi regime ... Read More:

VHS : Golden Earrings
Marlene Dietrich plays the gypsy Lydia, and in her raggedy clothes, black wig, and dark makeup, gives a whole other take on what sexy is all about. (Her gorgeous legs and bare feet get plenty of look-see throughout the picture.) Set near the beginning of WW II in the Black Forest of Germany, Dietrich helps Ray Milland escape the Nazis and obtain a secret poison gas formula. The plot is a bit thin, but both Milland and especially Dietrich put everything into their roles. The golden earrings are a prop used to help disguise Milland, and when he receives them in a box in London after ... Read More:
