Interesting and easy read - Fox has done his research well. My late husband's parents were Kenya settlers and his father had NO respect for the Happy Valley crowd AT ALL. Fox has certainly filled in many of the gaps left in the story my husband, Len Gill told me and has introduced me to a new side of some of the characters Len knew. I only wish I had read this book before my husband died of cancer. So many questions - so little time for answers.

VHS : The Mission
I watched The Mission in a class that I'm currently taking about the Literature of Human Rights in Latin America. The Mission is about the colonial time in South America and shows the treatment of indigenous people and human rights. If we really focus on this movie as a human rights oriented, we could see how the Indians were being treated by the Europeans. They would capture, slave them, exploit them, and the Indians have no saying in the matter; for the Europeans they were like animals, they have ... Read More:

VHS : Great Expectations
This is the best version of Great Expectations in film, I gave it a star because it's in VHS. I have no idea why they didn't come out on DVD.

Well...if any of you are waiting for DVD or planning to buy this VHS, think again. This film actually came out in DVD at UK so look somewhere else.

4.Looking Glass War starring: Christopher Jones, Pia Degermark, Ralph Richardson, Paul Rogers, Anthony Hopkins
directed by: Frank Pierson
June 02, 1998
Average Rating: out of 5 stars

VHS : Looking Glass War
The Looking Glass War is a mediocre adaptation of John Le Carre's novel of the same name. The acting is stilted and awkward, the screenplay poor, and the whole thing feels contrived, which it is. Even Anthony Hopkins' performance is poor. Bought it, watched it, put it up on eBay.

If you are looking for John Le Carre stories that have successfully made the jump from print to the silver screen, you want:

The Spy Who Came In From The Cold - Richard Burton is stunning in his portrayal of a burned ... Read More:

VHS : A Perfect Spy
First of all,if you are a fan of John LeCarre`s work, then you enjoy that detailed, realistic and methodical "real world" espionage life that LeCarre sucks you into. This BBC mini-series is a wonderful adaptation of the novel and has much re-watch value.I recommend reading the book "A Perfect Spy" before viewing the mini-series...you will enjoy it that much more if you do!A great BBC television program that will also appeal to fans of British television and foreign film. In my opinion the mini-series comes in 3rd place behind ... Read More:

This is a powerful, moving story on human purity of soul and courage vs alienation, hatred and the heartless, unbending character of military (also applicable to military-like) bureaucracies. This is an old story and movie, with great relevance for today's world.

8.Cal starring: Helen Mirren, John Lynch, Donal McCann, John Kavanagh, Ray McAnally
directed by: Pat O'Connor
September 01, 1998
Average Rating: out of 5 stars

VHS : Cal
This is one of the saddest, most beautiful movies I've ever seen. John Lynch and Helen Mirren give radiant performances and bring human faces to the struggle that is no-win for everyone. The members of the IRA are shown at once as monsters and victims and neither ever becomes the dominant way to view those who carry on the violence. Mark Knopfler wrote the soundtrack -- it only adds to the poignancy of the film. You can't miss w/ this one.

9.No Surrender starring: Michael Angelis, Avis Bunnage, James Ellis, Tom Georgeson, Bernard Hill
directed by: Peter Smith
Average Rating: out of 5 stars

VHS : No Surrender
This is one of my all-time favorite black comedies, but very obscure. Ray McAnally (played the bishop in The Mission) and Bernard Hill (played the captain in Titanic) spar in an alice-in-wonderland nightmare night as catholic and protestant groups are booked simultaneous in a outskirts-urban nightclub in Ireland for New Years Eve. I think it's brilliant but I should warn you, I've played it for a few people who stared in silence. In the tradition of older, 1950s English black comedies and parlor comedies but with the black humor element turned ... Read More:

I have seen this on TV, but I didn't give this five stars as I haven't watched the dvd yet and don't know if the dvd is of good quality. The movie, however, is excellent and deserves five plus stars. Daniel Day Lewis gives an awesome performance, as always. Very moving film.
