VHS : Freddie the Frog
I remember seeing this movie when I was very young, and while it's not the best animated film I've ever seen, it's certainly not the worst. The animation is satisfactory, and Freddie IS rather handsome and charming for a frog. Everyone has their own opinion about this film, of course, but maybe you negative critics out there are being just a wee bit too harsh. There are movies out there that are far worse than this one, you know.

VHS : Secrets & Lies
Mike Leigh's film won Best Picture at the Cannes Film Festival. A young black woman decides to find her birth-mother only to discover her mother is white, just one among many of the SECRETS & LIES of this tale. A first-rate cast delivers knock-out performances. A bit on the long side, the film has both drama and comical moments, with a healthy helping of tenderness. The DVD has a good quality transfer of the widescreen original but no bonus features apart from the trailer (and a few other ... Read More:

VHS : Invasion: Earth
Good sci-fi feast for fans of invasion dramas. My only complaint is the lack of closed captioning - not only for those who have hearing issues but also for those who have difficulty with British dialogue. It would have earned 5 stars had they added that one simple feature. The BBC tends to produce quality material with a focus on character development rather than expensive special effects; this is no different. It is worth watching - even owning - if this is the kind of stuff you like to see.

I knew when I read the back of the DVD what I was in for with this movie. To make things short, this is an almost scene for scene remake of "The Flesh and the Fiends" film also marketed as "Psycho Killers" "Mania" or "The Fiendish Ghouls". Those who have compared this to a "Hammer" film, may be interested to know that Hammer regular actor Peter Cushing played the main character role (Dr. Knox in this version instead or Dr. Rock) and also it also started Donald Pleasance of Halloween fame. Interestingly ... Read More:

VHS : And a Nightingale Sang
Although this film pales in comparison to the beautiful play from which it was based, this is still nonetheless worth watching. Joan Plowtwright is excellent as the mother, while the movie is commanded by a talented British ensemble. The story is often funny, poignant, and heartbreaking as it tells the wonderful story of one family's strength to endure through hardship. Unlike many pictures that have dealt with WWII, "Nightingale" is extremely effective as it deals with the war on a very personal and intimate basis. The ... Read More:

VHS : Franz Kafka's It's a Wonderful Life ... and Other Strange Tales
The first film is corny, either skip over it or just watch without any high expectations. The other three are excellent concept films that actually have themes and deal with real issues as well.

As someone who grew up in Kenya in the 50s and 60s, I can attest to the fact that this film captures the feel and the spirit of colonial Kenya better than any other film ever made. The characterizations are excellent, and the story is both entirely believable and captures the nature of colonialism without being judgemental. The little boy in the lead role does an excellent job - you can fully empathize with him - and the late Bob Peck is, as ever, superb in the role of the local head of the police. More explanation was needed of ... Read More:

VHS : The Dress
The Dress never ceases to surprise with a series of sometimes grotesque, sometimes beautiful "happenings" involving the garment of the film's title....These include a young french girl making love with all seven of Snow White's Seven Dwarfs and a fire fight involving a group of Tokyo transvestites, while our protagonist desperately tries to figure out which one is wearing "that" dress......You cannot afford to miss this film!
