VHS : Heart of Darkness
It is not surprising that this film, a work based on Joseph Conrad's thought-provoking novella of the same name, has garnered a wide variety of opinions and perspectives- just from the Amazon reviews alone! People saying its terrible, people who love it, even those who would have it as "art" above a normal television film. Well, I thought I'd add my two cents to the views already expressed. So here goes... First off, one who did not know any better would never be able to guess that it was made for ... Read More:

VHS : Remains of the Day
The beauty of Remains of the Day can not be overstated. The photography and art direction were superb in every way. The camera is usually at eye level in most shots, giving the film some intimacy within a great beautiful country home.

The film is based on the novel by Kazuo Ishiguro, a talented master of the understated and unsaid. Anthony Hopkins plays his best role in this film because so much of the acting depends on what is controlled and not said, yet conveyed through subtle movements ... Read More:

Terry Gilliam's unique satire is as funny as it is absurd and dark. With the character of Sam Lowry he created the perfect anti-hero, not in the least thanks to the brilliant performance by Jonathan Pryce.

Equally well known is the conflict that Gilliam had to enter into to get his movie released as he wanted it, because the studio heads suddenly got not only cold feet but also the crazy notion to have a happy ending and drastically make cuts in the movie to make it shorter. Gilliam took the right ... Read More:

One cannot help but be mesmerized by the wordcraft of Willy Maugham. Perhaps the best novel of all time is his "The Moon and Sixpence," a quasi-biographical social commentary of late 19th early 20th century mores and expectations.

In this fine novel, "The Razor's Edge," Larry, a young veteral of WWI, destined to financial "success" decides to go on the route to--pardon the cliche--"enlightenment." The woman who loves him, Izzy, cannot stomach that and marries Gray Maturin, Larry's buddy who'se always been in ... Read More:

What makes this horse movie extra special is that it is based on a true story & one of the three arabian stallions that made such a profound influence on the thoroughbred-it changed the breed forever. This film also shows the special bond between a boy & his horse. People of all ages will love this movie. I hope it comes out on Disc some day soon.

Rainy day movie. Simple plot that makes you feel like you are reading a romance novel. I guess I would classify this as a beach read except it is a movie. Not to complicated, but enjoyable.

VHS : Alice to Nowhere
Alice to Nowhere was a 'ripping yarn' novel from Evan Green. Sold to Crawfords, who produced it as a two part miniseries, so most of the detail of the book has been kept in the movie. This is not a sparse production. The movie is true to the book, except the main character has had a name change from Fred Crawford to Dave Mitchell - Hmmm. Strong performances, particularly by John Waters as Johnny.

The Birdsville track today is a track in name only, but should you plan to visit the 'Never Never' country, this movie would be a good introduction ... Read More:
