I was serving in the Marine Corps when this first came out. Many of us used to kick back and jeer at the discrepancies in it. Such as, The bulk of the story takes place at Camp Lejuene N.C. and it was filmed at Camp Pendleton Ca. The terrain at the two bases is radically different. Eastwood's platoon of recon marines is depicted as a ragtag crew of slackers. Marine force reconaissance is an elite ,all volunteer force in league with Army rangers and Navy SEALS. It's doubtful that such an unruly recon ... Read More:

VHS : Certain Fury
This film directed by Stephen Gyllenhaal is only interesting in that it presents two female protagonists, pre-empting his later preference for female actors, eg Barbara Hershey. There is enough rough housing - beatings, rape, fire, flood, rats, drugs, chase, guns - for action fans and the dramatic plot doesn't slow things down too much. However given that the main characters are female, screenwriter Michael Jacobs unfortunately subjects them both to extended humiliations.
The incident which sets Irene ... Read More:

I thought this one was very depressing. Did not leave me feeling good about any part of it. I know it is considered a classic but I would not want to watch it again.

You have absolutely no idea how long this has been nagging at me, trying to remember what the title was so I could finally track it down. LOVE IT!

VHS : Making of Fanny & Alexander
this documentary on the making of Ingmar Bergman's crowning masterpiece, 'Fanny and Alexander', is essential viewing, not just for admirers of the director's work, but for anyone who wants to get the most out of watching films. We are privileged to trace the miracle of creation, as the tedious process of rehearsals, takes, retakes, compositons, mapping of camera movements, is transformed into the magic of the final cut. On the way, we become alert to nuance and the specifics of film grammar (not just camera work and ... Read More:

Van Damme is on a quest to find the meaning of right and wrong in this movie. He battles in a tournament of martial arts to win the prize of a golden statue, which funds he can use to feed the street kids that he cares for. Formidable opponents square off in this movie from every country and Van Damme learns from the famous boxer, who teaches him how to stand up for what he believes is right and encourages him to win. The movie does have good scenes of martial arts, but they are usually short and the real appeal of this ... Read More:

I lived through the mining strike - and the closing of our pit - in another small British pit village. I knew many of the players in the band, similarly a top band (ironically, featured regularly on the BBC throughout). Every time I watch this film, which I do fairly regularly, it brings it all back: the community split between fight and resignation, the women fighting for their men's - and therefore their - livelihoods, the loyalties and frictions, the sense of helplessness under attack from Thatcher and the southern government, ... The movie is not bad for a "B" flick. Marc Singer's talent once again transends the material. I don't understand why this gifted actor toils in B movie hell.
