VHS : The Phantom of the Opera
Gerard Butler's singing made me cringe. Actually, he didn't sing as much as shout in a role that demands an excellent tenor. It killed a movie for me that otherwise was very good. You can do Professor Harold Hill with a non-singer but not the Phantom. Patrick Wilson did a fine job as Raoul. Emma Rossum had youth and innocence applicable to the role, and her singing is passable but immature, not surprising given that she was 18 when she made it. That Webber picked her personally shocks me since ... Read More:

VHS : Tall Tale: Unbelievable Adventure
TALL TALE has the potential to be an excellent film. The possibilities of a tall tale adventure with Pecos Bill, Calamity Jane, Paul Bunyan, and John Henry should be great. This isn't.
The two stars I gave it are for two performances that head and pretty good cast and the music by Randy Edelmen (the genius behind GETTYSBURG's score). Patrick Swayze is an excellent actor, and now I fully appreciate his ability to turn a complete dud of a role into gold. He takes the role of Pecos, a shallow ... Read More:

What were they thinking? Perhaps director Garry Marshall thought he could do for S&M what he'd done for the women of the evening in Pretty Woman. Wrap up an edgy topic in a big cute bow, and through humor make it palatable, even entertaining, to the masses. But you thought wrong Mr. Marshall. Actually, it is a surprisingly entertaining movie, it is just that most of the humor is unintentional. You can't believe the movie got green lighted when it was so obviously doomed to be a disaster.

First off, the American VHS release, listed here, has been dramatically edited from it's original six plus hours to down around two. This is very unfortunate. While the cut down version in itself is not a bad movie, the uncut series is nothing short of outstanding. The acting and production values are top notch ( Paul Hogan is fantastic, as are Andrew Clarke and Jon Blake ). World War 1 buffs will be very pleased at the dedication to authenticity in the series. In fact to me the series is almost on par with ... Read More:

VHS : Old School (Rated)
I don't think there is enough space in this review window to do this movie justice! This is the movie that helped launch the careers of such celebrated comedians like Will Ferrell, Luke Wilson and Vince Vaughn! And man do they earn their honors with this movie! I think one of the things that makes this movie so widely loved is that it identifies with college students as well as people in their later 20s and 30s.

There are so much LOL moments in this that you'll barely have time to catch a breath. This is a ... Read More:

VHS : Phantom of the Opera (1962)
I viewed three versions(1925, 1962 and 2004) of "The Phantom of the Opera" and enjoyed the ones made in 1962 and in 2004. I love the story of the 1962 version;the phantom is proved to be a respected music professor, a victim also a hero(by saving Christine's life) and people find out who is the actual "monster". Its stage is taken place in London Opera House instead of Paris.

VHS : Kentuckian (1955)
Released in 1955, "The Kentuckian" is one of only a couple films directed by Burt Lancaster.

THE STORY takes place during the presidency of James Madison circa 1815. Lancaster plays Eli Wakefield, a Kentuckian who desires more room to breath in Texas. Still in Kentucky, they blow their "Texas money" on freeing a beautiful indentured servant, Hannah (Dianne Foster). They don't get past the next frontier town where Eli takes up with his brother in the tabacco business and Hannah gets a job as a bar matron. Eli's ... Read More:

VHS : So I Married an Axe Murderer
This movie came out around the same time as the Wayne's World so it slipped under the radar screen. If you like Mike Myers' movies you will like this one. It has a good supporting cast and a not bad story line. It has made the rounds on premium cable channels and I'm glad to say is now part of my library.

10.Frankenstein starring: Patrick Bergin, Randy Quaid, John Mills, Lambert Wilson, Fiona Gillies

VHS : Frankenstein
I remember seeing this when it was first broadcast on TNT in 1993. I recently rented it and remembered how good it was all over again. My favorite film version of Frankenstein is the 1931 version with Boris Karloff. Of the modern versions, I like the Kenneth Branaugh (1994) version and this one. This version is more faithful to the Mary Shelley novel than most other versions. Randy Quaid was magnificent as the monster, and in my opinion did a better job than Robert De Niro in the 1994 version. This film shows what a serious and gifted ... Read More:
