| Having finally seen 'Twenty-One', it struck me how much of air of melancholy hangs over the film - even ennui. It's almost as if the film represents a kind of quiet, bittersweet recognition that the 'freedom' and 'individualism' promised by the Conservative regime of the 1980s turned out to be cold comfort, after the various shades of grey offered by state socialism had become 'so last century!'. | Forewarned is forearmed. I read several reviews of this movie, before I watched it, that cautioned me it would be disapointing. The reviewers, without saying so in as many words, let me know that this movie was low budget when filmed. I must add that many folks at home could reproduce all the action seen in this movie with a couple of video cameras and two VCRs. | This 1985 BBC production of Silas Marner is pretty loyal to Mary Ann Evan's (i.e. George Eliot's) novel "Silas Marner: The Weaver of Raveloe." I had to read the novel "Silas Marner" in 10th grade English. While I do not remember all of the minor details of the novel, I do not recall this BBC production missing any of the major characters or elements of plot.

| Translating a lengthy book to the movie screen is never easy, but this adaptation captures the essence of the story and the times. The scenery chosen and the costumes are great, while the cast is filled with familiar faces you love to see (Peter O'Toole, Joanna Lumley, Susan Hampshire, David McCallum, Penelope Keith). The indepth details/characterizations of the book may be missing - time alone would dictate that - nevertheless, the cast draws you into the story. | The first half of this video is great, it starts out with an amusing instance of mistaken identity, as two Austrian princes, who are also French lieutenants, mistake Indy for a delivery boy because he's riding a bike and his uniform is covered up by his coat. They run him off the road with their car, and are later shocked to learn that he's not only not a delivery boy, but that he's a captain, outranking them. | I remember watching this movie on ABC in 1987, and the videocassette version has been edited in several places. In fact, I think (though Amazon doesn't give running times) that the VHS version is considerably shorter than the broadcast version. Also, if you go by Playboy magazine's 1988 pictorial on the movie, there was a considerable amount of nudity which didn't make it (of course) into the original U.S. broadcast version, or (less explicably) into the VHS release. | Being a great fan of the novel and movie of "Coming Home," I was eager to see what happened next to favorite characters like Judith, Loveday, and Gus. Although Rosamunde Pilcher did not write this sequel herself, for the most part the characters remained true to form. Only Judith Dunbar, the admirable heroine of "Coming Home," seems to have had a personality downgrade. As well, a different actress played the part in this sequel and the whole essence of Judith seemed to change from bright girl marvel to whiney, jealous woman.
