We have been Herriot fans for years, and cannot get enough of the wonderful episodes on these videos. Laughter and warmth balance the truths of real-life people the pre- and post-war for farmers in the English Dales. We especially like the actors who participate ... they are not the Hollywood model types, but instead are people who easily make you believe they lived through the various stories.

Can't say enough good about it ... these are classic.

Oliver Hardy rarely made any solo appearances after being teamed with Stan Laurel, so it's interesting to see the kind of performance he put forth as a solo star after he was famous. (In his pre-stardom days he usually played heavies and supporting roles, not really a star in his own right.) This story takes place in the small town of Carterville, Mississippi in 1870, and Hardy plays Dr. Henry Tibbitt. His daughter Mary is about to get married to Jeff Carter, but Jeff's mother really doesn't like ... Read More:

"Honesty is the best politics," so sez Stan in their best ever comedy that is places The Boys at the height of '30s male political correctness ... bossy wives, smoking, drinking in Prohibition, male bonding clubs (i.e. the Shriners*), etc - how's that for "scholarly overtones"? In order to go to a Sons of the Desert convention in Chicago Ollie fakes Canus Delirious, as diagnosed by a doctor brought in by Stan - a veterinarian - because Stan "didn't think his religion made any difference." As usual Stan's ... Read More:

VHS : Laurel & Hardy: Way Out West
Way Out West is generally regarded as Laurel and Hardy's best feature film.Next to Sons Of The Desert. It is the only other L&H film to be a Stan Laurel Production(the other being Our Relations from a year earlier).Definetly one of my favourite L&H films. Not a dull moment in the movie.Rarely do we actually see Stan laugh. Not only is this one of their films where Oliver sings beautifully, but Stan also sings with a cartoonish trick voice. There are a lot of special effects in this movie as well.Such as Stan igniting ... This movie begins with Stan and Ollie in the employment office, waiting for any available job they can do. Ollie happens to overhear that a butler and maid, preferrably a married couple, are wanted to host a swank party in town, immediately, and decides the two of them will take the job. Stan is forced to put on female attire and a curly blonde wig, far from the first time he's dressed in drag in one of their movies. This entire scene at the dinner party is a remake of their 1928 silent short 'From Soup to Nuts,' only ... Read More:

VHS : Laurel & Hardy: Great Guns
Hampered by material better suited to Abbott and Costello, the decline of Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy began with this badly conceived 1941 comedy - a sad comedown from the Hal Roach days. The Boys try their best to redeem "Great Guns," but it's a losing battle. Stan and Ollie's lack of creative input is woefully apparent. If you want to see the team in military surroundings, track down the far-superior "Pack Up Your Troubles" (1932).

It's already been well-covered as to plot, deficiencies, etc. by other reviewers. So I will just say that, bogged down though it may be with a dreadful and forgettable romance that has little bearing on our boys, the merits far outweigh the slight defects. The 'Hundred Pipers' dance segment counts with their best, the bungled forced-suicide of Stanley's, ditto (Out of our sight, the gun goes off, but Stanley is revealed to be still standing; "What happened?" asks Ollie. "I missed," Stan replies tearfully.)Hard to beat that. Forget ... Read More:

This is one of my Top 5 favorite of L&H's pre-teaming shorts. Titus Tillsbury (Jimmy Finlayson) is a successful married businessman who is happily going about his life until one day out of the blue one of his old flames, Mae Busch, shows up and threatens to blackmail him. She says that unless he meets her for dinner at 7:00 at a certain restaurant, she's going to his wife with a scandalous picture of the two of them at the beach, which he signed with embarrassing and scandalous nicknames for the two of them. To make matters worse, Titus's ... Read More:
