Branagh's Hamlet

Watching Kenneth Branagh's massive film of the complete text of Hamlet for about the fourth time, I realized that this film mirrors the talents and career of its talented actor/director. Ever since his highly successful film of Henry V, which ably competes with the classic version of Olivier, it seems that Branagh has been trying to film another great Shakespeare movie, but ... VHS : A Midwinter's Tale
This is an excellent film - just the right mix of humor, fun, drama, and intensity. I have several copies of the VHS version and have been looking for the DVD...but no. It boggles the mind that so much trash is churned out on DVD, yet good entertainment like "A Midwinter's Tale" is consigned to VHS. Go figure. Please release this on DVD.

VHS : Sharpe, Collection Set 3 (Mission/Siege/Regiment)
Three more chances to see our hero Richard Sharpe proceed into France with some of the best and one of the worst of the series.

In SHARPE'S REGIMENT we get my favorite episode of the series and Sharpe and Harper travel back to England to try to find the missing 2nd regiment of the South Essex. The return of Sir Henry Simmerson, and the introduction of both Jane and Lady Anne Camoynes make the episode good, but the totally different setting and the look at the making of a British soldier makes it great. Sharpe is out ... Read More:

I should acknowledge, first of all, that this is probably my favorite of Shakespeare's plays; therefore, I'm inclined to be biased. Still, I loved this movie.

In particular, I was delighted to see Ben Kingsley as Feste the Jester and was impressed that he could sing so well.

I also really enjoyed the scenes wherein Olivia (Helena Bonham Carter) is being wooed by Viola (Imogen Stubbs) for the Duke (Toby Stephens). I liked the banter and the irony of the first scene in particular.

I purchased this movie to see Rupert Penry-Jones who I really like as an actor. I thought he was very good but could understand why he has stated that he will no longer play the guy who doesn't get the girl.

Cate was great and it really is her film. Billy Crudit (misspelled I am sure) really did a great job as the hero. Michael Gambon is a great favorite of mine also. This movie is done in the same way that Gambon did the Magret series for the BBC and PBS.

Really recommend this film for all ages. My grandaughter and daughter ... Read More:
