Branagh's Hamlet

Watching Kenneth Branagh's massive film of the complete text of Hamlet for about the fourth time, I realized that this film mirrors the talents and career of its talented actor/director. Ever since his highly successful film of Henry V, which ably competes with the classic version of Olivier, it seems that Branagh has been trying to film another great Shakespeare movie, ... VHS : Luigi Pirandello's The Rules of the Game (Broadway Theatre Archive)
Pirandello's "The Rules of the Game," which has nothing to do with the Renoir film of the same title, is a relatively minor entry in the Pirandello canon but it's still an intriguing and effective play.

This TV production, originally presented on PBS's Theater in America series, was based on a stage production by the Phoenix Repertory Company that played on Broadway in 1974. (And how sad is it that it's been so long since PBS has had anything like the Theater in America series?)

The main characters ... Read More:

VHS : Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels
Okay, so my title is taken from a movie that has no relation whatsoever to this British gem (`Paris When is Sizzles') but it was that movie that really explains well why this movie is so amazing. In `Paris When is Sizzles', Hepburn and Holden are constantly talking about the importance of the switch in filmmaking, that is a plot twist that catches the audience off guard and captures the attention. They go back and forth about switches on switches on switches. `Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels' has switches in spades. ... Read More:

I wish this movie was on DVD! I don't own a VHS player and have been dying to see this again. I used to watch this movie all the time when I was about 12 years old. It was such a fun, comical, entertaining little cheese-fest. I loved it! I hope it gets released sometime on dvd or bluray for those of us who have ditched vhs!!!

VHS : The Jewel in the Crown - Complete Set
Back in 1982 I bought in Abu Dhabi the Jewel in the Crown in 12 VHS and I am happy I have seen it in only 4 DVDS at Amazon. The quality of the reproduction, so far, (who can see 4 x 3hrs each DVD in such a short time) is excellent and it is a pleasure hearing a good english speaking after so many american slang movies we see everyday at TV. Thanks.

VHS : Family Plot
The last ever Hitchcock film is a good movie, but lacks the cutting edge that his best movies always have. Contrary to some reviews I have read I thought the cast were fine and William Devane, Karen Black and Bruce Dern have all done many other interesting films. No doubt that Al Pacino would have been better though!

The main problem with the film is that is never really decides what it wants to be. There's some light black comedy and a bit of suspense but nothing really ever grabs you like his best films. The screenplay is by Ernest ... Read More:

May be of interest for fans of Carey Lowell (who I wish I hadn't learned was married to Richard Gere), or for "fans" of bad-movie maestro Albert Pyun. A somewhat fun little romp with plenty of stupid.
