VHS : The Night We Never Met
This movie, like many of its characters, was not at all what it appeared to be at first look. The plot was intriguing, and I love Matthew Broderick, so I snapped it up at my local video store. Sadly, my enjoyment was ruined by the forehead-slapping lack of credible action by the characters. I had a few laughs at the antics of performance artist Pastel, played by Jean Tripplehorne, and a few of Broderick's blind dates were amusing to watch, but most of the time I was torn between liking the characters ... VHS : Smoke (1995)
This little gem is one of the unsung classics of the nineties. Director Wayne Wang and co-director and scenarist Paul Auster have crafted a film that at turns funny, poignant, and tragic in a way that will always stay with you. Some may be turned off because the film centers on a Brooklyn tobacco shop and for sure there is a lot of casual smoking here but that's just a starting point for a script that follows a variety of interesting characters and many intriguing story twists. Harvey Keitel as Auggie ... Read More:

I enjoyed this film so much. And the key to enjoying it is to get rid of any preconceived ideas of what a horror film should be like. It keeps a sarcastic tone from beginning to end, and to tell you the truth, I spent a considerable part of the movie laughing when I was supposed to be scared. Carol Kane is fantastic as Dorine, and her performance alone is worth the price of the DVD. The soundtrack is also great and very fitting to the atmosphere. Just watch the opening credits and you'll know what I'm talking about!

Ok, here goes:

This movie is a bit of a tough watch, and a tough one to rate. The positives are the acting - Connery, Pfeiffer, Brandenauer, etc all play their parts very well. And the settings were good - Russia looked like what we (American point of view, here) imagine it to be, and the same for Portugal...

I'd like to give it more than 3 stars, just for the above reasons and the fact that I personally liked the theme.

Unfortunately, the plot is tedious a la the LeCarre novels of the ... Read More:

This isn't a varey realistic movie but it is fun. It sort of belongs on the shelf next to "Wayne's World". By this time the basic premise ( I hesitate to say "plot") is well known.
Chazz Darvey, singer guitarist for "The Lone Rangers" (a running joke throughout)has a fight with his beautiful blond but irritated live in girlfriend, Kayla, who has become increasingly digusted that she does all the work and pays all the bills while Chazz is unemployed and unsuccessful in his quest to become a full time musician. After one fight ... Read More:
