VHS : Goodbye Mr. Chips (1969)
Ive been waiting such a long time for this movie to come out on dvd. It wasn't the best musical but I found it very entertaining and Peter o"Toole is especially wonderful as always. Petula Clark is fine and touching and love her singing.

VHS : Shake Hands With the Devil
James Cagney made according my personal opinion, a tour de force performance and his most superb artistic achievement, personifying the leader of IRA. Through the innocent gaze of a naïve student who sudden and accidentally becomes involved in rebel activities, Cagney will exert on him a spelling influence but gradually he will realize the core of the human being behind the mask: a murderous fanatic.

A ravishing jewel of Michael Anderson, one of the best and remarkable British filmmakers ... Read More:

VHS : The Wind in the Willows
I believe that a narrator can really make an audio book and Flo Gibson does such a fabulous job of the voices of the characters in "The Wind in the Willows". This is one of my son's all time favorite books and audio books. I highly recommend it.

VHS : Alfred Hitchcock Collection: Sabotage, Man Who knew Too Much, 39 Steps, Lady Vanishes, Young And Innocent, Number 17, Rich And Strange, Murder, Secret Agent
As the next reviewer states, these are recorded in EP mode and the quality suffers, BUT WHAT A COLLECTION! I was especially pleased to see that the 10th tape was Sean O'Casey's Juno and the Paycock. Hitchcock's early films are such a joy: German Expressionism, slapstick comedy, long, long takes that show off the stage sense of the actors and Hitchcock himself, the beginnings of his particular film style, and his deep sense of social justice. If you can afford The Early Years DVD Collection you will get most of the same films, ... Read More:

I just don't understand why it's taking so long for the dvd to be released.
Same goes for the beautiful soundtrack. Has there ever been one?

VHS : Bear Island
Bear Island is one of those movies I want to like more for all its cheesiness. Barely released theatrically, cut heavily for home video and rarely shown on TV, it marked the end of the big screen Alistair MacLean goldmine (subsequent adaptations would be straight to cable) and, pretty much, the viability of most of the cast as leading players - Donald Sutherland, Vanessa Redgrave and Richard Widmark in particular would soon be relegated to the little leagues or supporting roles. At times it's like a bad accent competition, with Richard Widmark's German ... Read More:

VHS : Dead of Night
Please note that I'm commenting only on the film itself, not the various VHS tapes which carry it. The best picture quality I've encountered is on the Anchor Bay two-movie, two DVD disc set which also includes The Queen of Spades film. The Anchor Bay DVD transfer shows some age but is in good overall shape.

Dead of Night remains, sixty years after it was made at Ealing Studios, one of the creepiest and most intelligent of supernatural films. No, it doesn't have creaking coffins, or pale hands edging through a doorway, or Ruritanian vampires. It has a country ... Read More:
