VHS : Student Prince (1954)
I was dragged to this movie as a young boy. What young man wants to see a movie with a singing prince and a love story? It didn't take long for me to enjoy the story of male bonding by singing and drinking in the beer garden soon to be followed by a sword fight.
I can almost imagine myself serenading the beautiful and sexy barmaid (Ann Bylthe), especially with the flawless voice from GOD(Mario Lanza) lip-synced to near perfection by the prince(Edmund Purdom).
All this plus an arrogant ... Read More:

Duck Soup (1933) - Leo McCarey

The Marx Brothers are almost totally unique in the history of film, and when I say unique, I'm not even referring to how innovative they are. True, they definitely developed a particular style of comedy that I would say is probably now the dominant form in all of American comedy. How would I characterize it? It's difficult, but it includes a combination of anarchy, irony, and self-awareness. I paraphrase Roger Ebert when he states that you can clearly see what ... Read More:

...but, where is amazon coming up with the names of the principal characters in the movie?!? What about CARY GRANT & INGRID BERGMAN, two of the best actors/actresses ever? It seems as if this would be a very difficult mistake to make; it's pretty obvious on the cover of the movie even if you know nothing about the movie itself. Can't amazon do any better than this? I think a wonderful classic like this with such amazing and timeless actors deserves better.

The 1939 film "Juarez" depicts the debacle of the French attempt to establish hegemony in Mexico under the auspices of Maximilian von Habsburg. The unlikely combination of characters involved in the fiasco shows that once again truth is stranger than fiction. Louis-Napoleon Bonaparte, styling himself as Emperor of the French, was the master manipulator of the affair which sent the Austrian Archduke Maximilian to his doom. Maximilian's consort was the intelligent and mercurial Charlotte (Carlota) of Belgium, a granddaughter ... Read More:

I bought this for my father who loves classics. The tape was a bit staticky and it was clear it was an old tape, but still a good movie.

Glorious music and glorious robes for Liz Taylor. Butmy God what a trashy story - yes, of course the woman has to be selfless, of course she has no talent whatsoever. This is how girls were taught to be dummies....

when people write a bad review about an item, in this case a DVD, that they never should have purchased if they didn't like musicals, or bought it, watched it, and came back here to give it a bad review because they enjoyed a different version of the film that included actors they enjoyed more. I've never seen the Philadelphia Story, although I would like to do so one day. If I enjoy TPS more than "High Society," that doesn't automatically make HS worthless.

I've always loved this movie and decided to purchase it today. When I saw two ... Read More:

This movie is very much of a time--that being the German occupation of Paris during World War II. It's the story of two people, each of whom has a Past--with a capital "P." There's a strong sense of world weariness along with a strong desire to survive and avenge. Ingrid Bergman, as always, is magnificent, and Charles Boyer, as always, is a dream. I give it five stars because it's an all-time favorite of mine, not because it's what the AFI--or anyone else--would call a great movie.

10.The Red Pony (45th Anniversay Edition) starring: Myrna Loy, Robert Mitchum, Louis Calhern, Shepperd Strudwick, Peter Miles

If you read Steinbeck's novel of the same title already, either lower your expectations for the film, don't watch it, or watch it as if it's a different story.

Shepperd Strudwick does a fine job acting as the petty, mean-spirited, controlling Fred Tiflin. Decent performances were also delivered by Myrna Loy as Alice, Peter Miles as the boy Tom, Robert Mitchum as cowboy Billy Buck and Louis Calhern as Grandfather. Robert Mitchum as Billy Buck seemed an odd choice as the novel made one expect an older, heavier man. Poor acting didn't kill this film, the rewriting did. ... Read More:
