| i just saw this movie early this morning i was able to see only 75 to 80 percent of it because i was still in bed very tired but when i saw legendary actor paul newman in it i decided to give it a shot paul newman was good as harry keach in it he was serious but yet adding a little bit of comedy acting he plays a strict father who was very tough on his son and wanted him to grow up by being able to take care of himself he lost his wife in the life and had a difficult time continuing with the rest ... | It's not as if Men of Respect is a poor tranposition of the play Macbeth; it's just a bad mob movie. I was hoping to find a Godfather meets Macbeth, but instead got a Carlito's Way meets Macbeth. There was a reason I had never heard of this movie until recently. I should have known from the lame title. |

| I was really excited about this movie. First of all it's a Coen film. Second of all James Gandolfini is in the film; not to mention Scarlett Johansson and Frances McDormand. Sure, Billy Bob Thornton is the star, and I like him (don't love him) but the other four selling points were much stronger. On top of all that it is a film noir, and lately I've been on a real film noir kick. | I first saw this film in Seattle in a tiny theatre that my friend, Carpenter Bill had remodeled by the sweat of his own brow. From the opening cement scene to the haunting conclusion, this film inspires on many levels. I own the DVD and watch it whenever I need to be feel good inside.
Disregard the esoteric tripe above in the elitist New Yorker review. If you are a real, breathing human who has ever worked a physical job for a living, you will treasure this movie. A lean creation with economy of statement and flairs ... Read More: |

| Never liked either of the two leads, Gere or Garcia. "American Gigolo" was dreck masquerading as something edgy and "Godfather 3" was misery to view.
That said, Gere redeems as the tense and unlikable Dennis Peck. He'll steal, takes bribes, screw your wife, stick you in the back any way he can, the kind of sociopathic personality that one hopes they never meet.He's also a cop.
