| This 1985 BBC production of Silas Marner is pretty loyal to Mary Ann Evan's (i.e. George Eliot's) novel "Silas Marner: The Weaver of Raveloe." I had to read the novel "Silas Marner" in 10th grade English. While I do not remember all of the minor details of the novel, I do not recall this BBC production missing any of the major characters or elements of plot.

| Sorry, I know this was shot in 1986, but I don't remember the rest of the films shot that year being THIS technically terrible. The bad effects and film quality are so distracting, it actually makes the movie almost laughable. Not a good quality in any film, let alone a period piece.
I'm not as familiar with this Jane Austen work as some of her others, but if her leading lady is as dreamy as portrayed here with so much internal fantasizing going on, you're going to need a special director to pull it off. I assume ... Read More: |

| One reviewer here comments that the Pimpernel books are ones any child should read.
Well, not in the original perhaps: the Barnoness' original "Scarlet Pimpernel" book is blatently anti-Semitic in the very "best" English uppercrust tradition of the sixteenth-twentieth centuries. In order to appear harmless and keep the villain at arms length, the hero disguises himself as a typical old dirty grasping servile cowering cowardly Jew. Let the kiddies watch the videos instead. |

| This is a superb adaptation of George Elliot's novel of the same name. Set in nineteenth century England in the rural town of Middlemarch, it follows the lives of several of its inhabitants, as the threads of their lives intertwine with those of others. | Absolutely wonderful - first class acting and incredibly informative. My teen daughters, were as engrossed as their father and me. Top notch and recommend to all high school and up who have an interest in science, geography, history or any number of other subjects that this movie based on a book covers. Having seen the actual clock in Greenwich many times, it made the viewing even more delicious and interesting. I certainly would not rate it R, there was nothing remotely distasteful in this movie. Buy it, rent it, but don't miss it! |

| My children are in their 20's now and remember this movie as children. We would like their younger siblings to have it's viewing experience. When can it get on DVD? We also listened to the book on tape while on a rainy vacation, it was wonderful! |
