VHS : Sarah Plain And Tall
First off, let me clarify in my personal response that I've never been a fan of the historical fiction genre. Historical fiction books bore me, and they never seem to contain the excitement found in contemporary fiction. Sarah, Plain and Tall, while more character-centric than most historical fiction books, still just didn't catch my interest. I was just glad that unlike many historical fiction books, this one actually didn't shove random historical facts down the readers' throats in massive clumps ... Read More:

Sarah Wheaton (Glenn Close) is a mail-order bride in 1910 who answers an ad for a "wife" to "make a difference" in a families life. She moves from Maine to Kansas (a long train ride). The man she answers to is Jacob Witting (Christopher Walken). He and his 2 kids (Anna and Caleb) are still mourning the death of his wife, Katherine, after 6 years. She writes to them many times before deciding to do a 30 day trial in which she lives with the family to see how things work out. They go through many hardships before ... Read More:

I bought this a couple of years ago but never had the chance to watch it. I am glad I did.

I believe the characters, I believe the story. Then again, when it is two superb craftsmen as Mary Tyler Moore and Robert Preston, it is quite easy. Incredible nuance in both of their performances, never a false note.

And Sam Waterston is a hoot!!! My wife and I are Law & Order addicts and to see him in this role was hysterical.

VHS : Sarah Plain & Tall Trilogy (3pc)
If you are looking for a wholesome film that is well acted with a storyline that is original and captivating, this is the film for you and your family. Set in historic America, it admirably portrays the upright pioneering values of God-fearing, hard-working American immigrants. The complex three dimensionality of the characters creates a chemistry rarely seen in good story-telling movies. Don't miss this one, the kids and you will love it.

There's something very special about this movie; the book upon which it was based must have something to do with this. I saw it years ago--but it still resonates. One day I'll get around to reading the book+

VHS : Invasion USA
This movie proves once and for all that Chuck Norris was the force that ended the Cold War. It's clearly a documentary, or at least largely based on real events.

It is full of explosions, awkward dialogue, and nonsensical terrorist action (magic bazookas! attacking minorities at dance clubs!). And, of course, Chuck "savior of humanity" Norris.

There is some sort of backstory involving Hunter and Rostov, but it's probably irrelevant to the movie - otherwise, they would have put it in, right? Also, a thousand men just happen to ... Read More:

Adapted from the short story by John Cheever, this Terrence McNally screenplay for Public Television, stars Lawrence Luckinbill as a self-centered business executive and Mary Beth Hurt as the mentally ill secretary he has hired, seduced, and then fired. Directed by James Ivory, this 1979 drama builds considerable suspense based upon the loathsome behavior of executive John Blake (Luckinbill), whose high-handed and egotistical treatment of his wife, son, neighbors, employees, and the vulnerable Jane Dent (Hurt) cause immense pain to everyone but himself. His level of cruelty ... Read More:
