VHS : Wise Blood
This great, unjustly forgotten John Huston film has fallen by the wayside, and that's a real shame. A striking cinematic adaptation of the Flannery O'Connor novel, Wise Blood boasts Brad Dourif in the lead role, Hazel Motes, and Dourif nails it. When you see the film, you realize it would be really tough to imagine anyone else alive at the time being able to carry off the role. Harry Dean Stanton, as usual, adds his terrific skills as the "blind" preacher Asa Hawkes, and Ned Beatty is also along ... Read More:

VHS : Abandon Ship
From the opening scenes, director Richard Sale makes you aware that this is not going to be a "pretty" film. With the small shot of a simple sea mine floating in the water transforming into a classic 1950s explosion with horrific screams of passengers, Sale again reminds you that this is not going to be a typical Hollywood disaster film. As a reviewer, I must remind those reading that this is not a pretty picture - do not expect your typical film where the heroine always makes good decisions and those that ... Read More:

VHS : Frankenstein & The Monster From Hell
This one was a little different from the prior Cushing Frankenstein entries in that the monster was a little updated and certainly a more sympathetic creature. But he could still tear up the dickens when he was displeased!

It takes place as a young Baron Frankenstein devotee, a competent and youthful-looking surgeon, is arrested by a buffoon of a constable for sorcery and is tossed into an insane asylum. And guess who's really running the nuthouse? Baron Frankenstein (Cushing)!

The Baron rescues the young ... Read More:

Mostly I enjoyed this film. I liked that much is from the little boy's veiwpoint. There is a certain suspense and foreboding throughout, both physical and imagined. There are many small details that fill out the story. There is a scene at night when the boy is scared to pass by steps leading down to a dark place, and he jumps past them to minimize his exposure to whatever evils may be lurking down there...details like this remind me of the fear a child feels. He is a believable little boy, never seems like we are watching "acting". The parents are ... Read More:
