Interesting and easy read - Fox has done his research well. My late husband's parents were Kenya settlers and his father had NO respect for the Happy Valley crowd AT ALL. Fox has certainly filled in many of the gaps left in the story my husband, Len Gill told me and has introduced me to a new side of some of the characters Len knew. I only wish I had read this book before my husband died of cancer. So many questions - so little time for answers.

This has a lot of oddball parts to it, but overall it's very good fun and a good way of spending a quiet evening in. There's some great lines and a lot of very entertaining visuals, with some good action too. Great!

Michael Radford's adaptation of the well-known novel by Orwell is very faithful to its source material and very impressive. The cast is perfect in its leading trio: John Hurt as Winston Smith, Suzanna Hamilton as Julia and last but certainly not least in his last movie performance Richard Burton as O'Brien.

Orwell's dystopian vision of the future will be well known to most of us.
Winston Smith, the central character, lives in a totalitarian world, in which all pay homage to the ... Read More:

So which version will you pursue:648 minutes or the 564?

Hint: There is more than one national Amazon; and despite the postage you may actually save a small amount of money with something older, longer, and with better visuals. And regions are no longer a legal issue with some of the later players.

You knew all that already, but...

As a substitute teacher in a middle school English class, I was left this movie to show the class. I knew nothing about it, but I got caught up in its innocent (but never simple-minded) charms. I had to stay late after school to see how it ended! I did not know that Disney had returned so strongly to G and PG rated movie-making. Yes, it is a bit sentimental, but life needs a bit of that, and it offers plenty of food for thought for grown-ups too. A genuine surprise -- and pleasure.

7.The Elephant Man starring: Anthony Hopkins, John Hurt, Anne Bancroft, John Gielgud, Wendy Hiller

VHS : The Elephant Man
Rightly regarded as one of the classic British films of the last decades, this broadly true tale of dignified humanity shining through the gloomy, impersonal smog of Victorian London hardly puts a foot wrong. Anthony Hopkins is superb as the dispassionate surgeon who rescues the maltreated circus freak and convincingly settles his own (and our) moral doubt as to whether he has simply replaced the morbid curiosity of the voyeuristic crowds for an equally exploitative scientific curiosity and means of personal gain. But it is ... Read More:

Uma Thurman is not a very good actress. She's tall, & reasonably attractive, & sometimes blonde, but she was the poster-girl for the Uber-hip set in the late 80's/early 90's so for that set, she was a perfect choice as Sissy Hankshaw. Having read & loved this book, I knew she was not a good choice, and she was subsequently was named Worst Actress of 1993 for her terrible attempt to portray Cissy. Likewise, Rain aka Rain- bow aka Rain Phoenix was also miscast, as well as not being talented enough to pull off the role ... Read More:

Poor Larry Baker, after viewing "The Flamingo Rising" it is easy to see why he was so disappointed with this screenplay adaptation of his novel. Rather than an effective and efficient visual condensation of his book, the film is more like what would result if a film company ran out of money in mid-production (with a third of the scheduled scenes still to be shot) and just assembled the available stuff into a plausible sequence. Unfortunately, the missing third contained many scenes that explain what is happening.

It's probably funny because I'm a Star Wars fanboy. I'll admit to it. Don't expect everything from this movie and you won't be disappointed. It's just simple fun, not to be too overly analyzed. Way better than those damn Scary (or Epic, or Superhero, or Not Another Teen) Movies.
