VHS : The Man in The Iron Mask: Literary Masterpieces
No offence to DiCaprio but Richard Chamberlain's duel role of "The Man in the Iron Mask" was definitely better. It amazes me only foreign versions of this on DVD are available. Why not a Region 1 version? Chamberlain did three wonderful Dumas classics, this "The Count of Monte Cristo", and "The Three Musketeers". The first two are not available on Region 1 DVDs after all these years. Great movie that I highly recommend for the whole family. Let's hope someone like Criterion gets the rights for both ... I remember seeing this movie when I was very young, and while it's not the best animated film I've ever seen, it's certainly not the worst. The animation is satisfactory, and Freddie IS rather handsome and charming for a frog. Everyone has their own opinion about this film, of course, but maybe you negative critics out there are being just a wee bit too harsh. There are movies out there that are far worse than this one, you know.

I love period dramas, but this was the worst. I did not even finish the movie because it was awful. The immorality alone took it from period drama to pandering soap opera. The characters are weak-willed, lack integrity and make mistake after mistake which they resolve by less than noble means. From homosexuality to abortion to infidelity, this movie was totally tasteless and not deserving of anyone's time or attention. Skip it.

Elswhere on these boards I have written a review of the Erskine Childers novel of the same name upon which this movie is based, drawing attention to its significance in helping shape British defence and foreign policy in the first decade of the last century by highlighting the threat Germany posed to Britain's Eastern defences in particular .
No such considerations are likely to enter the minds of those watching this movie as they will take it for what it is -a beautifully shot ,and exciting tale of espionage and ... Read More:

A well-directed arthouse style movie. It is disturbing but necessarily so...brilliant performance by Richard Burton!

Hadn't seen this movie in a few years (quite a few) and caught it on AMC just the other night during their Fear Fest '08. I taped it and have been watching it with glee every day too.

David and Jack are attacked early in the movie by a Werewolf, David's life is spared by the patrons of the Slaughtered Lamb pub, but now he has inherited the bloodline of the beast, and is the last one apparently and needs to die in order for all the people he will kill (plus Jack) to cross over to the other side, as they currently walk ... What makes this horse movie extra special is that it is based on a true story & one of the three arabian stallions that made such a profound influence on the thoroughbred-it changed the breed forever. This film also shows the special bond between a boy & his horse. People of all ages will love this movie. I hope it comes out on Disc some day soon.

If you like Civil War-era stories and whether or not you read the three books, I think you should enjoy this production. The characters, costumes, settings are all very true to the periods. It should be noted that if you are a Civil War (battles) buff, there aren't many here, it is a story of a family of the Old South and how they cope. I think the character portrayals are all great. One may think Leslie Anne is a little sappy, while at the same time the strength of the story, but it does work. I highly recommend.

This 1985 BBC production of Silas Marner is pretty loyal to Mary Ann Evan's (i.e. George Eliot's) novel "Silas Marner: The Weaver of Raveloe." I had to read the novel "Silas Marner" in 10th grade English. While I do not remember all of the minor details of the novel, I do not recall this BBC production missing any of the major characters or elements of plot.

I also have always enjoyed watching videos starring Ben Kingsley (ex: Oliver Twist, Gandhi, Schindler's List). While Silas Marner seldom speaks for the first half of the film, Ben ... Read More:

I have to admit that I liked the epcot-esque city in which this story is based. Its retro sci-fi look is great and lends itself well to the story. The special effects range from "good for the time" to just plain "bad". The story itself drags on a little too long. There is no reason this movie should be 120 minutes. The premise, however, is good and has not been well duplicated since the original. I simply wish sci-fi movies could have avoided "coming of age" during the time of psychedelic filmography. Hard core classic sci-fi fans might be intrigued, ... Read More:
