VHS : It's a Wonderful Life
Frank Capra's meditation on the connections each man builds to those around him is the pure, distilled essence of holiday spirit. In a world that's forever beating us down with reminders of our isolation and of the lack of meaning in our lives, this is a bright and shiny rebuttal.

I don't know that anyone but Jimmy Stewart could play the nice guy who always does the right thing and inject that character with the darkness necessary to turn a schmaltzy premise into a profound statement ... Read More:

This WWII political drama starring Jimmy Stewart and Margaret Sullavan, along with very young Robert Stack, Dan Dailey, Robert Young and of course, the Wizard of Oz, Frank Morgan, who is fabulous in this dramatic role, has been overlooked by the wizards of Hollywood. Due to the overall excellence of the film, great acting and wonderful scenes of Jimmy and Margaret "skiing" in the Alps at night, it should be listed, at least, as one of the best 100 films.

This is a personal favorite. The author of the book, Nevil Shute, was an aircraft engineer and worked on the Airship R100. He also worked with the famous inventor Barnes Wallis. These facts give the film some credibility in regards to metallergy. Reading the book might give insight into the accuracy the film-maker put into the scientific statements Stewart's character spoke.

Regardless of the details it is still a good picture.

5.You Can't Take It With You (1938) starring: Jean Arthur, James Stewart, Lionel Barrymore, Edward Arnold, Mischa Auer

VHS : You Can't Take It With You (1938)
This 1938 film was a big hit in the years of the Great Depression. It is terribly dated and unfunny today, given a changed culture. It begins on Wall Street when Mr. Kirby arrives at the building that has his name on it. Kirby & Co. will have the biggest monopoly on war munitions after he has bought all the property surrounding a competitor's factory. An early mechanical calculator is shown. The Vanderhoff family do their own thing at their large home. [This must be attractive to the unemployed of that day.] We meet each of them and their personality. ... Read More:

How can it be that Walter Matthau's best performance, especially a comedy performance, is not available on DVD? It's a shame, because this is arguably the most brilliant dark comedy from that wonderful golden age of grown-up films from the mid 60s to the mid 70s. This movie is way too funny and brilliant to be this undercover and cult. Elaine May is to comedy what Coppola and Scorsese were to drama. Her writing is as good as comedy writing gets, and her performance gives a glimpse at how wonderful a comic actress she really is. No B.S. either. This one of the ... Read More:

This was a very enjoyable movie. Jimmy Stewart fans will not be disappointed. It's humorous, sweet, and does a good job on the sensitive subject matter that is included in the story. I highly recommend it.

VHS : Rear Window
I am a big fan of both Grace Kelly and Alfred Hitchcock, but I really think this film is ridiculous. We are made to believe that somehow this photographer (Stewart) is holed up in his shoddy back-alley apartment due to an injury, but his gorgeous socialite girlfriend (Kelly) is not at all averse to hanging out there constantly. She looks as out of place as a Tiffany lamp in a public restroom. There is also a ridiculous attempt at sexualizing Kelly, involving her showing Stewart a piece of not-so-revealing lingerie (not even wearing, just showing) as "a taste of things ... Read More:
