VHS : Agatha Christie's Miss Marple Collection 2 (VHS Boxed Set)
On my TV set with my DVD player all of the discs looked and sounded fine.
I enjoy Helen Hayes for being Helen Hayes and Margaret Rutherford for being Margaret Rutherford but for Agatha Christies Miss Marple Jane Hickson wins hands down. I have tried only one of the latest British entry and she, too, appears quite able but Ms. Hickson has set the standard for authenticity (which, quite legitimately, was not the objective of Ms. Hayes or Ms. Rutherford).
To one who has never been to the ... Read More:

VHS : Emma (1997)
I think, to a certain degree, comparison with Douglas McGrath's 1996 movie featuring Gwyneth Paltrow is inevitable. However, I must alert my reader to the fact that - when I praise this alternate version from Diarmuid Lawrence - I do so with the original novel in mind. This mini-series has not a movie's glamour, nor does Kate Beckinsale match Paltrow in beauty. However, with regards to Jane Austen's beloved work, this is undoubtedly the more faithful adaptation. Beckinsale's portrayal is less flighty and ... Read More:

his little cousin will invite him into her world.

VHS : Miss Marple: Murder at the Vicarage
+++++

I watched this movie without reading the 1930 Dame Agatha Christie novel that it was based on. (This novel introduced the world to Miss Marple. Christie wrote twelve Miss Marple murder mysteries altogether.) I'm glad I did this! Why? Because it forced me to really watch the movie in order to try and deduce who the murderer was.

A murder occurs at the vicarage in the small village in which Agatha Christie's heroine super sleuth Miss Marple (the late Joan Hickson) lives. Inspector ... Read More:

I received a copy of this only yesterday from a friend in the UK...I was prepared to be mildly entertained (and amused at the late '70's fashions) for 90 minutes, but I was HOOKED from the start. There are a few scenes that could have benefitted greatly by the use of today's computer generated special effects (if you've seen the film, you know the scenes I'm talking about..) but this isn't about SFX...it's a mind-game (literally), and the supporting players..Derek Jacobi, Michael Hordern, Alan Badel, Jeremy Brett, Gordon Jackson, ...
