VHS : Streets of Laredo
A long way from the Hollywoodised version of a Lonesome Dove sequel seen in `Return from Lonesome Dove', this is Larry McMurty's riposte to the way the Studio handled that sequel. Where `Return..' dealt with the cattle barons and themes of redemption and wholesome endings, this is a stark and realistic portrayal of the West. Here, the violent men of the burgeoning West are a dying breed (no pun intended) and that sense of a time in history passing is present throughout the whole movie.

VHS : Skin Game
In the mid-70's James Garner & Louis Gossett teamed up in two memorable episodes of "The Rockford Files". Before that, however, they starred in "The Skin Game" with Susan Clark (best known as the mother on the t.v. show "Webster"). The Skin game is a smart comedy which also functions as an effective critique of the institution of slavery. All three stars are appealing and Garner does what he did best in "Maverick" and Rockford -- the con game. The con here is simple but enjoyable. The movie includes good ... Read More:

3.Thrill of It All starring: Doris Day, James Garner, Arlene Francis, Edward Andrews, Reginald Owen

VHS : Thrill of It All
This is a fabulous movie. Great plot, cute kids, clean humor (even the adult parts) without being cheesy and old fashioned. This is my absolute favorite Doris Day movie. Every actor, including the kids, pulls it off so believably. I highly recommend this movie for every Doris Day or James Garner fan and even those who aren't.

I watched this movie again on cable for the umpteenth time recently, and I just have to comment on the one editorial review by Bruce Diones of The New Yorker:

He says "the film is as bland and sentimental as a greeting card."

Mr. Diones clearly is not in possession of a beating heart in his chest. If he has been so lucky as to have a woman love him, I feel sorry for her. And if that sounds harsh, then so be it.

This film delivers on so many levels. It is obviously an incredibly ... Read More:

VHS : A Tree Grows in Brooklyn
This is such a great movie. I am really surprised that it is not on DVD yet. As far as I can tell, Fox Movie Channel is the only network that plays it and that is not offered with our cable package. I would buy a couple of copies if it were on DVD.

7.Victor Victoria starring: Julie Andrews, James Garner, Robert Preston, Lesley Ann Warren, Alex Karras
directed by: Blake Edwards
February 11, 1997

VHS : Victor Victoria
For anyone who thinks that Julie Andrews is nothing more than a mere song and dance routine, or the voice behind that infectiously annoying `hills are alive' song I have only one thing to say to you; watch `Victor/Victoria'. I happened to stumble onto this film last night and I have thought of nothing else since. Sure, it has yet to be 24 hours but honestly, it is the ONLY thing that I have thought of since the credits began to roll. As a whole the film is adorable, but its strongest part is none other than Julie Andrews. ... Read More:

VHS : My Name Is Bill W.
Although not for everybody, this film gives us insight into the struggles of Bill Wilson and Dr. Bob the founders of AA. I think the acting was excellent. The characters were portrayed wonderfully by James Woods and James Garner. I learned a lot from this film and would recommend it to anybody who is involved in a 12 step program or works with recovery.

9.Cash McCall starring: James Garner, Natalie Wood, Nina Foch, Dean Jagger, E.G. Marshall

VHS : Cash McCall

I have all Cameron Hawley's books in hardcover, and am glad to say Executive Suite has finally been issued on DVD. However, where is Cash McCall, it is way past time for it to appear. Warner Brothers is very tardy in issuing some of their better genre work, with Cash McCall being one. Yellowstone Kelly with Clint Walker and the 2nd season of Cheyenne being two more.

Back to Cash McCall: this is a movie fairly true to the novel, and the performers are excellently suited for the picture. Dean Jagger was coming ... Read More:

VHS : The Lonesome Dove Collection (Lonesome Dove/Streets of Laredo/Dead Man's Walk)
Lonesome Dove is one of the finest Western films I have ever seen. Robert Duvall and Tommy Lee Jones are top notch in this movie.
