VHS : Laurel & Hardy: Way Out West
Way Out West is generally regarded as Laurel and Hardy's best feature film.Next to Sons Of The Desert. It is the only other L&H film to be a Stan Laurel Production(the other being Our Relations from a year earlier).Definetly one of my favourite L&H films. Not a dull moment in the movie.Rarely do we actually see Stan laugh. Not only is this one of their films where Oliver sings beautifully, but Stan also sings with a cartoonish trick voice. There are a lot of special effects in this movie as well.Such ... It's already been well-covered as to plot, deficiencies, etc. by other reviewers. So I will just say that, bogged down though it may be with a dreadful and forgettable romance that has little bearing on our boys, the merits far outweigh the slight defects. The 'Hundred Pipers' dance segment counts with their best, the bungled forced-suicide of Stanley's, ditto (Out of our sight, the gun goes off, but Stanley is revealed to be still standing; "What happened?" asks Ollie. "I missed," Stan replies tearfully.)Hard ... Read More:

VHS : Laurel & Hardy: Love 'Em & Weep
This is one of my Top 5 favorite of L&H's pre-teaming shorts. Titus Tillsbury (Jimmy Finlayson) is a successful married businessman who is happily going about his life until one day out of the blue one of his old flames, Mae Busch, shows up and threatens to blackmail him. She says that unless he meets her for dinner at 7:00 at a certain restaurant, she's going to his wife with a scandalous picture of the two of them at the beach, which he signed with embarrassing and scandalous nicknames for the two of them. To make ... Read More:

VHS : The Second Hundred Years
Laurel and Hardy are my choice for the greatest comedy team in the history of cinema. While some have argued the team's work lacked the social message of Chaplin's, the technical innovation of Buster Keaton, "the boys" didn't have the same grace and rhythm to their movement as Chaplin but, Laurel and Hardy simply provided more belly laughs than Chaplin, W.C. Fields, Harold Lloyd and Buster Keaton. And I say this as an admirer of all those other comics.

Most fans of the team are probably more familiar with ... Read More:

A get-even, escalation.

Very funny. Not just music. Planned so you follow the action, just by watching, at a quick pace. Builds the plot for a couple minutes, then takes off, at ever increasing speed. Only 20-minutes, seems like 5-minutes. Better than a talkie. Laurel & Hardy's best (I have seen them all).

Laurel & Hardy's silent, "Soup to Nuts" is also good. Both available on DVD, for a lot more money: "The Lost Films of Laurel and Hardy" ("Big Business" is in volume-1).

Block-Heads (John G. Blystone, 1938)

When you start collecting all the thousand-best-movies-ever lists and correlating them, you find some interesting stuff. I've never been a big fan of Laurel and Hardy's shorts, but I'd never seen any of their full-length features. Since Block-Heads is on one of those lists (Scaruffi's, if anyone but me is keeping track), and since it happened to show up on turner Classic Movies last night, I figured I'd give it a whirl and see. And I did find it quite enjoyable, if not side-splittingly ... Read More:

7.Saps at Sea - Laurel & Hardy starring: Stan Laurel, Oliver Hardy, James Finlayson, Ben Turpin, Richard Cramer

VHS : Saps at Sea - Laurel & Hardy
Though "Saps at Sea" (1940) looks like a pair of three-reel comedies stuck together, the result is undiluted Laurel and Hardy. This streamlined feature marked Stan and Ollie's last production for Hal Roach, with The Boys making the most out of thin material. Memorable appearances by Jimmy Finlayson, Rychard Cramer and Ben Turpin add to the fun. No classic, but far superior to the team's dispiriting post-Roach efforts.

8.Laurel & Hardy: Pack Up Your Troubles starring: Mary Carr, Richard Cramer, Don Dillaway, Jackie Lyn Dufton, Muriel Evans

VHS : Laurel & Hardy: Pack Up Your Troubles
This was the boys' second feature film, and I feel it's one of their best. It kind of begins like their 1927 short 'Duck Soup,' only in the short the boys are trying to evade service with the forest rangers, who need help in putting out a fire, and in PUYT they're trying to get out of serving in WWI. However, they can't get away with this for very long, and eventually are pressed into duty. The scenes in the trenches and at the barracks are pure classic L&H, one constant laugh-riot all of the way through, particularly when they're capturing all ... Read More:

This is a very disappointing film for anyone going into it thinking they are going to see monsters. One of Universal's weakest films and sneakiest tricks! Shame on you! It's an OK murder mystery at best and they only reason to see it is because it is included with three other "Werewolf" films on the Wolfman Legacy Collection DVD set. The DVD transfer is very good and they are some interesting extras.

10.Roy Rogers: Best of West - Grand Canyon starring: Roy Rogers, Trigger, Jane Frazee, Andy Devine, Robert Livingston
directed by: William Witney
February 26, 2002
Average Rating: out of 5 stars

VHS : Roy Rogers: Best of West - Grand Canyon
Grand Canyon Trail is the song Roy sings. Actually, the plot borrows heavily on Stan & Laurel's Way Out West. A hotel, a mine a mule... Even the sheriff might be James Finlayson himself! Film connoisseurs will also recognize in Roy and Jane Frazee's performance a hint of John Wayne and Ella Raines in Tall in the Saddle. It's too bad the video quality is so poor it looks like it's raining all the time. Although the box reads 67 minutes, the movie is really 57 minutes long, and you can tell when something is missing.
