VHS : Ode to Billy Joe
*********** SPOILER ALERT ***********

This was a well-acted portrayal of teen heartache and heartbreak.

The lyrics of the theme song by Bobbie Gentry allegedly had some basis in truth.

Max Baer Jr.'s production of this film gave him a vehicle to break out of his "Jethro Bodine" stereotype.

A young Mackenzie Philips played Bobbie Lee's friend.

When I saw this film as a youth one of my schoolmates reached the conclusion that "Billy ... Read More:

VHS : The End (1978)
I remember my parent's taking my brother, sister, and I as kids to see this movie. (A LONG time ago)
I found it hilarious as a child, and watched it several times as an adolescent on cable. I ordered it because I remember Dom DeLuise being SO GREAT as Sonny's best INSANE friend trying to help him kill himself. Throughout the years my family has kept phrases from this movie alive. Such as "Your right Sonny, it's not high enough!" Or we mimic Burt at the end of the movie bargaining with God. The closer ... Read More:

I grew up watching the Ma and Pa Kettle series on PBS on Sunday mornings. I was so excited to discover that they had been released on video, I was able to 'rediscover' these screen gems. Ma and Pa make me laugh out loud! I would recommend this to anyone who likes to revisit fun and innocent times.

VHS : Man Called Peter
This is one of those movies that will warm your heart and truly make you feel good. Ernest Hemingway once said that all true stories end in death, and this is a true story. But that aside, and even though the title character, Peter Marshall, meets his death, it is not at all sad, it is the story of how a man lived and the wonder he brought into his life and the joy of all those he touched. The performances of Richard Todd and Jean Peters are riveting and powerful. I don't believe that any other actor could have ... Read More:

VHS : Rolling Thunder
In the 1970s, Hollywood came out with some "vengeance" movies. Another one that comes to mind is "The Farmer," which I saw with a group of buddies at the (Air Force) base theater.

Anyway, while "Rolling Thunder" might be short on military protocol (sloppy salutes and ill-fitting uniforms), it's long on what you would expect from this genre.

The bad guys are bad: Dirty rotten scoundrels in need of a shave and full of greed. They hang out in seedy bars and whorehouses and wear filthy shirts and have bad ... Read More:

VHS : Savages (1974)
I saw this one a long time ago. It is a good drama with excellent acting that has a nice twist in the end. Andy Griffith played a bad guy in this one which is an unusual role for him. He did it well. Some accomplished character actors play supporting roles including Noah Berry Jr. The action is fairly low-key. There is violence but the movie emphasizes the malevolence of Griffith's character and his cynicism over blood and gore. It is a character piece and a bit of a survival tale.

One reason that this movie so interests me is that ... Read More:

The best of the series, without a doubt.Filmed on location in Georgia, this episode has a different feel than the rest of the series.A free spirit, fun loving episode, yet still with Jesse Duke's inbred decency and character upon Bo and Luke.Future episodes clashed with this debut's statement that Luke owned a car that he loaned to Cooter, and the lack of mentioning that Cooter owned a garage (Cooter was far more wild in this episode than he would be later). To think if the series would be different if it had stayed in the Covington area and not Hollywood ... Readers of this space know that I consider Billie Holiday above all, doped up or straight, the undisputed "Queen" of female jazz singers. From a Cole Porter tune like "Let's Do It" to a soulful "Strange Fruit" her timing and sense of the song was uncanny. However, even a great singer like Billie had earlier singers that influenced her and that is where we pick up the career of the jazz singer under review here, Ethel Waters. Her name may not be known today, except to early jazz aficionados or those who recall her award-winning role as a force of Mother ... Read More:
