VHS : Animal Farm (1999)
This is a well-done adaptation of the book. It isn't perfect, but kids like it much better than the 1950s cartoon version. For teachers looking for a good version to accompany the book, I recommend it. I have used both and sometimes use both as a good jumping off place for discussion.

VHS : Hamlet (1990)
After seeing Olivier's version of Hamlet, I was interested in seeing this version of Hamlet. Admittedly, Mel Gibson was one-hundred percent of my impulse to see this film. I don't usually follow actors when choosing movies; I trust directors more than I trust actors in choosing movies. But Mel Gibson is an exception to this rule: when was the last time the man made a bad movie?-- I can't even think of one.

With this said, I rented this movie and watched it with growing delight and amazement. As ... Read More:

I did not think they could suscessfully make a flim of this story without it being a shambles. I was very happy to learn I was wrong they did an outstanding job with special effects as well as the tale told in the movie by staying on task with what needed to be included and triming what could be taken out.

VHS : The Man in The Iron Mask: Literary Masterpieces
No offence to DiCaprio but Richard Chamberlain's duel role of "The Man in the Iron Mask" was definitely better. It amazes me only foreign versions of this on DVD are available. Why not a Region 1 version? Chamberlain did three wonderful Dumas classics, this "The Count of Monte Cristo", and "The Three Musketeers". The first two are not available on Region 1 DVDs after all these years. Great movie that I highly recommend for the whole family. Let's hope someone like Criterion gets the rights for both Chamberlain's ... Read More:

Terry Gilliam's unique satire is as funny as it is absurd and dark. With the character of Sam Lowry he created the perfect anti-hero, not in the least thanks to the brilliant performance by Jonathan Pryce.

Equally well known is the conflict that Gilliam had to enter into to get his movie released as he wanted it, because the studio heads suddenly got not only cold feet but also the crazy notion to have a happy ending and drastically make cuts in the movie to make it shorter. Gilliam took the right approach, ... Read More:

VHS : Return of the Borrowers
Wonderful sequel to The Borrowers. It's true that it doesn't stick faithfully to Mary Norton's books, but it's still close enough to make the movie interesting and delightful to watch. The actors are all fabulous especially Rebecca Callard as Arrietty and Daniel Newman as Spiller (wonder what they are doing now and what else they've done?). Highly recommended for both adults and kids; you will not be bored. The only problem is the quality of the tape really really sucks - which is really too bad. I truly hope they will come out ... VHS : Young Winston
Young Winston is the story of Winston Churchill. It begins with him being sent off to school at about six, but spends much of its time with him as a young officer in the British Army. The best part to me was the episode during the Boar where he was captured and then escaped. I've been to the spot where he was captured and it was rendered very well in the movie. Indeed it was to see this event that I bought the movie and I was not dissappointed.

Although he had a craving for publicity and perhaps over stated his own abilities, ... Read More:

VHS : Kafka
"KAFKA" is one of those movies that was both negelected by the audience and the critics, and very unjustifiably so. What's exactly wrong with this picture? Is it because a lot of Very Heavy-Thinking Bookreaders claim that the real Franz Kafka is untouchable, and so: not-filmable, and there for, when this is done anyway, it must be condemned even before one single frame is actually seen?

But this is not about Mr. Real Kafka, it's about Mr. Fictitious Kafka, even one without Franz as a first name. This Mr. Fictitious Kafka writes about men ... Read More:

VHS : Holocaust (The Mini-Series) (SP mode)
I remember watching this when I was a junior high student. It was the first I had heard of the horrible fate of six million European Jews under Hitler's Nazi Europe. It was so moving and heartbreaking that I remember crying several times. When I visited the Holocaust museum in Washington, D.C., one of the curators told me that this series really gave Americans their first realistic glimpse of Jewish life in Nazi Germany

I watched it again and was still incredibly moved. The Family Weiss is the story of many families in 1930's Germany, Josef, ... Read More:
