Great war film I just watched on this silent classics VHS, which at the moment is the only place its available. There's nothing wrong with this release at all, in fact it has a score by the wonderful Carl Davis, the highest sought-after silent film composer. Nice picture, and a great film.

VHS : Woman of Affairs (Silent)

Garbo has the ability to make any picture she was in a transcendent marvel, but this one comes across as just a heavy-handed weeper. She and John Gilbert love each other, but his father talks him out of marrying her - for "honor's sake" (what honor?), and he marries another instead. Garbo, too, marries someone else, John Mack Brown, a sleazebag who ends up killing himself when he's about to be arrested for embezzlement. Of course Garbo and Gilbert are still madly in love with each other, but when Garbo sees ... Read More:

Drunkard / street beggar Annie has been stealing hotel stationary for years and writing her daughter (who lives in Spain) letters full of extravagant lies about how she's a rich member NYC's high society. But Annie's cows are about to come home to roost because her daughter is coming to visit with her fiancée and his father Count Romero. Around this point logic is thrown far, far out the window never to return.

The use of the mushrooming lie can be used to great comic effect (HAIL THE CONQUERING HERO ... Read More:

VHS : Mammy (1930)
The story of this film is mediocre. Al Fuller, one of the stars in a vaudeville act, is in love with his best friend's girl. However, his best friend treats the girl badly. The two get into a fight about the way she should be treated, and another cast member frames Al, making it look as if he tried to murder his best friend. The supporting cast is not memorable enough to carry the show to its limit which makes it less engaging than it could be.

The songs in this films are not outstanding either, except for ... Read More:

VHS : Joan the Woman
This 1916 production is DeMille's first big spectacle picture and lays the groundwork for his most famous work in later decades, and it already has many of the DeMille hallmarks: grand battle scenes, impressive sets and dramatic performances by the principal players. "Joan the Woman" is a fairly accurate historical account of Joan of Arc, with the addition of a romance between Joan and Englishman Eric Trent to add deeper emotion and drama to which the audience can relate, as well as another intriguing aspect to make the film come to life and ... VHS : My Best Girl (Silent)
Did you know Mary Pickford met her 3rd husband, Charles "Buddy" Rogers during casting for this film? Anyway, that's what gives this movie an extra intrigue for me. I mean, here she was married to the dashing Douglas Fairbanks at the time when she's canoodling with Buddy Rogers in the movie... And Buddy's sooo handsome and charming! (Have you seen him in 'Old Man Rhythm' 1933)

Mary's performance is wonderful too, she's got the character down (her mannerisms and facial expressions are right on). So, endearing, this movie is one of my ... Read More:

If you haven't seen this overlooked gem, then get it. It is a wonderfully warm and witty movie that features some of the best acting that Sinatra has ever done. His scenes with Edward G and Thelma Ritter are exceptional. The whole ensemble works perfectly together. My only regret is that is it not yet released on DVD and/or in the letter-boxed edition. It is one of my all time favorite movies and I regularly show it to friends; the opinion is always the same...everyone loves it. Highly recommended...and of course, for the whole family.
