VHS : Skin Game
In the mid-70's James Garner & Louis Gossett teamed up in two memorable episodes of "The Rockford Files". Before that, however, they starred in "The Skin Game" with Susan Clark (best known as the mother on the t.v. show "Webster"). The Skin game is a smart comedy which also functions as an effective critique of the institution of slavery. All three stars are appealing and Garner does what he did best in "Maverick" and Rockford -- the con game. The con here is simple but enjoyable. The movie includes ... Read More:

The picture looks better, no more blips or speckles. And I thought it was interesting when William Friedkin says Hitchcock loved working with fake backdrops. I never knew that, interesting in the age of CGI technology.

VHS : Harold & Maude (Aniv)
I first saw this movie when I was about 14 years old (1979), back in the days when movie channels would play the same 2-3 movies over and over. I fell in love with it then and have been in love with it ever since. I even won a free ice cream cone at the Ben an Jerry's in Ithaca, NY when (in 2002) I was able to tell them the significance of Maude's tatoo. I have always told my friends that Harold and Maude is my favorite movie and that I think the best movie ever made was Life is Beautiful, by Roberto Bergnini. If you ... Read More:

This is one of my favorite Jeanette MacDonald movies. Even without Nelson Eddy, this movie is full of wonderful music by Jeanette and Allan Jones. Highly recommended!

VHS : Bad Seed
When asked the movie from childhood I remember best, this is the one. The Birds, The Blob,
even Baby Jane and Sweet Charlotte did not have the impact of Patty McCormack's stellar performance in this movie. Maybe after seeing it was when I became terrified of going in our farmhouse basement...and lightning.
Perhaps it even influenced my interest in mental illness and led me to work 20 yrs. in a state mental hospital!
I watched it as an adult and was still captivated by the quality of the performances as well as the ... Read More:

The "Cheyenne Social Club" features two legendary actors who define Hollywood's portrayal of the American West. Texas cowboy O'Hanlon (Stewart) receives a letter from a lawyer in Cheyenne notifying him that his brother D.J. has passed away and that he has become the heir to his late brother's estate. He and his saddle-pal Harley Sullivan (Fonda) leave the Texas range and begin the 1000 mile ride to Wyoming.

The trip to Cheyenne provides the backdrop for a 1000 mile conversation by Sullivan, much to the bemused annoyance of the stoic ... Read More:

This lavish retelling of Les Liaisons Dangereuses stars Annette Benning as the Marquise de Merteuil, a nasty aristocrat who delights in manipulating those around her.
