VHS : Hamlet (1990)
After seeing Olivier's version of Hamlet, I was interested in seeing this version of Hamlet. Admittedly, Mel Gibson was one-hundred percent of my impulse to see this film. I don't usually follow actors when choosing movies; I trust directors more than I trust actors in choosing movies. But Mel Gibson is an exception to this rule: when was the last time the man made a bad movie?-- I can't even think of one.

With this said, I rented this movie and watched it with growing delight and amazement. ... Read More:

VHS : Mighty Aphrodite
Mighty Aphrodite (1995) won an Oscar and a Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actress for Mira Sorvino, and a nomination for Best Original Screenplay for Woody Allen. Sorvino, the Harvard educated daughter of actor Paul Sorvino, plays a squeaky-voiced, potty mouth hooker. Her character is none too bright, and though she aspires to be an actress, and has appeared in several pornographic films, she is terrible. Somewhat of a stretch, considering that Mira Sorvino is an Academy Award winner, and she graduated magna ... Read More:

VHS : A Room With a View
I give this 5 stars not just for being a masterpiece of a story but also as a wonderful trip to Florence (and the english countryside). Julian Sands and Helena Bonham Carter fans will also be pleased.

The movie edition is the special edition with all the special features - just enclosed in a thin metal casing. I was impressed that the metal casing is the exact same dimensions as a typical plastic dvd casing. It just seems more substantial and fitting for a movie of this calibre. I will definitely buy the Steelbook edition of Man on Fire, and I wish more movies were available in this casing. The movie itself is great, and the special features are very deep with several commentaries and loads of behind the scenes extras. ... Read More:

Richard (Kenneth Branagh), a frustrated painter and would-be airplane builder, has a mid-life crisis and ends up afoul of the law. He's sentenced to community service and assigned to be a companion to Jane (Helen Bonham Carter), who is suffering with the end stages of ALS. She's sarcastic and angry and he's depressed, but eventually their frienship grows; then she asks him for a favor that only he can do.

This remarkably uplifting true story is funny and tragic and just plain wonderful. Carter is well-cast as the ... Read More:

7.Howard's End starring: Anthony Hopkins, Emma Thompson, Vanessa Redgrave, Helena Bonham Carter, Joseph Bennett

VHS : Howard's End
A magnificently told tale of sin, forgiveness, redemption, and the settling of accounts

Though slow-moving throughout (my only complaint against this film, and a minor one at that), HOWARD'S END is many things: a costume drama, a period piece, a film with some of the best acting you could ever hope to find, and at times, a comedy of errors with some very unique and unpredictable plot twists. The story revolves around two families -- the Schlegels and the Wilcoxes -- and a marriage which almost connects them, a close friendship ... Read More:

8.The Great War and the Shaping of the 20th Century starring: Michael Barrett, Elya Baskin, Helena Bonham Carter, Kevin Brownlow, Sean Cowley

VHS : The Great War and the Shaping of the 20th Century
This is by far the best WWI documentary. I have seen a bunch of others, but this one adds the intangibles that the others don't: perspectives, art, depression, grappling with issues and the war itself. Also, PBS offers an incredible website that goes along with the documentaries. They need to come out with a DVD series of this ASAP.

I should acknowledge, first of all, that this is probably my favorite of Shakespeare's plays; therefore, I'm inclined to be biased. Still, I loved this movie.

In particular, I was delighted to see Ben Kingsley as Feste the Jester and was impressed that he could sing so well.

I also really enjoyed the scenes wherein Olivia (Helena Bonham Carter) is being wooed by Viola (Imogen Stubbs) for the Duke (Toby Stephens). I liked the banter and the irony of the first scene in particular.

10.Merlin starring: Sam Neill, Helena Bonham Carter, Miranda Richardson, John Gielgud, Martin Short
directed by: Steve Barron
August 18, 1998
Average Rating: out of 5 stars

VHS : Merlin
Originally made as a TV miniseries, Merlin retells the famous legend of King Arthur from the perspective of the wizard Merlin. Sam Neill stars in title role with co-stars Martin Short, Miranda Richardson, Helena Bonham Carter, Isabella Rossellini, Rutger Hauer, John Gielgud, and Lena Headey. It was directed by Steve Barron and produced by Dyson Lovell. In my opinion, it has to be the best movie I've ever seen telling the story of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table, even though it deviates from the more traditional approach to the myth. Judging ... Read More:
