VHS : Matewan
This is a great movie. That being said, the events it is alleged to portray are only a small part of THIS film. There's a story being told by Mr. Sayles about the conditions in which the miners and their families lived, what their prospects for improvement were, the efforts to unionize the coal fields, and the efforts to thwart the unionization of the same, but beware that you understand that Mr. Sayles was telling a story that only refers to what happened in Matewan and Bloody Mingo in 1920-1921. ... VHS : Eight Men Out
Eight Men Out tells the story about one of baseball's darkest days; the 1919 World Series scandal. Eight baseball players from the White Sox team decide to throw the World Series due to the own of the team poor treatment to the players. Though one of them, Buck Weaver, defends his innocents. The movie seems to be true to fact, but it suggests it all took place in the same year. The players were not banned from baseball til the end of the 1920. If nothing else, like the period clothing back then.

VHS : Skeletons in the Closet
This little psych-thriller had some meat to it, but the cast is what made it. Treat Williams, Linda Hamilton, and Jonathan Jackson were excellent, and I found myself quite absorbed by the mindgames that seemed to be going on between the father, and son, not to mention the uncertainty that they provoked in Hamilton's character.

It was fun , and I'll see it again.

Director Larry Elikann is a man of contradiction. He can tear your heart out with Mare Winningham as a homeless mother in God Bless the Child, but he also has an affinity with Armande Assante since he has used him so many times. Assante's macho swagger and don't-mess-with-me attitude may be Elikann's definition of masculinity but unfortunately in this HBO TVM either the director allows or insisted on Assante mangling his lines so that he is mostly unintelligible. I suppose real men like Assante and his ilk don't need to say much but ... Read More:

I teach the non-fiction novel LEFT FOR DEAD to ninth graders, and this film is a gem! It is a re-enactment of the sinking of the USS Indianapolis. The movie focuses on the ship's captain, McVay. I use this film to give my students a visual perspective for when they read the non-fiction book. They enjoy the film.

Interesting scenario; Battle hardened Marine Colonel drops in to secure a besieged embassy and evacuate the staff. His men are getting killed by snipers and a hostile crowd. He gives the order to engage, but is the only person among the group with a clear view of the armed bad guys in the crowd. The Marines fire on the crowd and it creates a firestorm in the press and the State Department with everyone trying to save their careers by sacrificing the Colonel.

Even more interesting to me is what this movie portrays almost ... Read More:

VHS : In the Line of Duty:Ambush in Waco
All this movie was was more propaganda to try and demonize David Koresh and the Branch Davidians and make our government look like the "good guys." The ATF wasn't the "good guys" in this situation. If you think they were, ask Robert Gonzalez. He himself was an ATF agent that was sent to infiltrate the group... He doesn't condone the raid or the way the raid was conducted. This movie could have been produced by the government itself and it couldn't have cast them in a better light. Complete an utter propaganda.
