VHS : Native Son (1986)
I understand the perspectives of the other online-reviewers; however, being an English teacher, I have found this video to be quite beneficial and complimentary in assisting me and helping my students to understand the characterization and themes in Native Son. It is not an outstanding performance; however, it does offer a color cinematic version, while having actors that are recongnizable to a younger generation.

I do not believe that many outstanding novels can ever really be properly ... Read More:

Thirty years after his death, John Wayne remains an enigma. Many books have been written about him, none of which I've read, and so I know little of his personal life other than he has been both praised for embodying traditional American ideals and reviled for his archconservative bigotry.

Yet he remains today perhaps this country's biggest movie star. Today's actors - Tom Hanks, Russell Crowe, Liam Neeson, Jack Nicholson - are more accomplished actors with greater range; while from Wayne's era, ... Read More:

VHS : Summer & Smoke
Summer and Smoke has Geraldine Page as a woman in love with a young man next door. She lives in a parsonage with her dictatorial, repressed father, and a mentally ill mother. The film unflods and we see the tragedy approaching, and Ms Page becoming more and more aware of it, culminating in her final scene.

The lyricism of her acting, her gestures, her inner pleading, and her silences are wrenching and strangely evocative of how things are for many people..no hope left, but the edge that rejection and despair ... Read More:

VHS : Something for Joey
Quite possibly the best sports story ever made; truth is better than fiction. This incredible true story chronicles the life of Joey Cappelletti, little brother to the 1973 Heisman Trophy Winner (and big brother) John Cappelletti. There are so many reasons to purchase and watch this film. It is inspirational, historically accurate (it uses actual game films of PSU football -- and John Cappelletti of course), but perhaps most of all; it chronicles a simple American family's struggle with faith through triumph and tragedy. It ... Read More:

VHS : The Dollmaker
Jane Fonda is unforgettable as a resourceful, unassuming, uniquely gifted, remarkably loyal, and courageous country woman. Her husband, a struggling Appalachian sharecropper, finds a job in the big city of Detroit in the early twentieth century. Believing he has found a better life for his family, he sends for them. They uproot themselves from their familiar rural homeland, and join him in a crowded, dehumanizing, housing development set up for factory workers. Soon the family, and the main character (The Dollmaker) begin to unravel ... Read More:

VHS : Dear Heart
With those lines, Henry Manicini's song begins one of the finest romatic movies Hollywood ever produced. I have loved "Dear Heart" from my first viewing so many years ago on television, and I was so happy when it was first released on VHS. I actually sent letters asking the movie be saved. Now, it is about to be forgotten again, and that would be such a shame. I hope someone will rescue this most wonderful of movies and release it on DVD. I promise to be an ardent customer.
Why is the movie so special? - wonderful script, superb ... Read More:

This movie has the best dancers ever! A dancer tries to leave the USSR after a plane crash but they want to force him to stay to dance in the country. His roomates want to leave with him after they find out the wife is pregnant. Excellent movie I used to watch this movie over and over again as a child and now that I have it on DVD I'm sure I will again!
