VHS : Island of the Blue Dolphins
This is the story of Karana, a young Indian girl raised on an island off the coast of California. Supposedly it is based on a true story, and it tells of how she survived on her native island after all of her people were removed and her younger brother was killed. The reader never knows why Karana's people were removed from the island, which would have helped me understand the story a bit better.

While Scott O'Dell is a good storyteller, there are some gaps that I wished he had explained ... Read More:

Today I work with many Asians. Particularly I have many Japanese customers. As a teen seeing this movie for the first time I couldn't appreciate how prophetic it was.

I decided to pick it up and watch it again, not having seen it for over 20 years. It holds up so, so well.

Don't get caught up in all the anti-USA propaganda of the past decade. Watch this movie. It will help you recognize that the USA is still a young nation, filled with the promise and naive "can-do" attitude that only ... Read More:

'Lonely are the Brave' was the film that Kirk Douglas, himself, regards as his favorite. No, it's not a big Hollywood flash like 'Spartacus' but it is the subtle and tragic rendention of a time and life style already gone. It's a tale of the passing of the old West and the disappearance of men--independent men--who couldn't or wouldn't change.

Douglas--Jack Burns--in the film is a man intolerant of rules, fences and civilization. He's a cowboy with an ideology. His sense of honor is antequated, perhaps, ... Read More:

Do not be fooled because it is an old movie. This is just an old black and white but it will thrill your mind. You will never figure out who did it. It is about the only movie I ever saw where Bruce Dern plays a decent guy. He is usually a bad guy and does a good job with that role. In this movie, he is a nice, clean-cut, guy.

Please, no more John Wayne-Dean Martin movies. Just as slow moving and horsey as they get.

VHS : Lullaby of Broadway
This is a fairly entertaining musical movie but doesn't compare with the old MGM musicals. Doris Day is always good but the movie doesn't hold up with the changing times.

In this installemnt, a 747 is taken over by would-be art thieves (who are assisted by the co-pilot) andultimately crash in the Bermuda Triangle. Fortunately for the passengers, the plane lands on a sandbar in relatively shallow water. Tensions raise and eventually the Navy comes to the rescue, but not before we get the usual 1970's drama of watching people come unglued.

There is a good bunch of characters, including three guys who intend to be drunk the entire flight, the nun who plays guitar, the old lady with a taste for boilermakers, and ... Read More:

This is a great film about 2 guys that grow up in a bomb shelter and venture out into the post nuclear war world to see what's out there. I really liked the way this movie captured my interest from the very start. It is true that a post nuclear setting is not new to fiction or the silver screen, but there's just something very intriguing about how this story unfolds. The characters graduate from the insides of a bomb shelter to a world much different from our own. Living underground didn't just protect them from radioactivity, it also sheltered them from the corruption and ... Read More:

VHS : Flight of the Phoenix (1965)
This may not have won any awards, but it is a great story superbly acted by a stellar cast. Infinitely better than the recent trashy remake. The interplay between the characters is finely done and keeps you hooked from start to finish. Best film of 1965 without a doubt and definitely an important addition to anyone's history of cinema collection.
