VHS : Sphinx
Saw this movie when it first came out ages ago and it always stuck in my mind. I confess that a couple of the main resons it stayed with me was because of the stunning images of the Egyptian countryside and monuments, the equally stunningly gorgeous Frank Langella, and finally, it was a good story about black market buying of ancient artifacts. Erica Bane, played by Lesley-Ann Down, comes to Egypt to prove a hypothosis she has regarding Pharoh Seti the First. There she meets a shop owner, played ... Read More:

VHS : Dave
This movie is very fun, and Kevin Kline and Sigourney Weaver are excellent in it.

Kevin Kline plays two parts in the movie, Dave and President Bill Mitchell. Dave operates a temp agency and also makes a few extra bucks playing President Bill Mitchell.

The night Mitchell is to give an important speech Dave is used as a decoy so that the real President can make it to the speech without the press hounding him. After the speech though the President meets up with one of his aids and while ... Read More:

I go to movies for entertainment, and unless the movie has been touted as a 100%, bona fide accurate portrayal of the subject, then I have no problem if facts are embellished. This is Ridley Scott's vision of Christopher Columbus and his quest for the New World, and he has artistic license to create his vision and in my opinion did so magnificently with this film. I never got the feeling that Columbus was made a hero by this movie. The portrayal I saw was of a deeply flawed, brilliant man who did in fact commit great wrong ... Read More:

VHS : Lolita (1997)
This film gets better and better each time I watch it. I never seem to tire of it. It has a fantastic poetic quality that takes it's cues from the novel. One of the greatest love tragedies I have ever come across. Not demon film everyone makes it out to be. A masterpiece in every sense of the word and Lyne's best film.

A must see for anyone who loves a good, honest love tale.

VHS : Eccentricities of a Nightingale (Broadway Theatre Archive)
Tennessee Williams often said that the character of Miss Alma in this version of his play was his favorite. Williams usually used his outstanding heroines as his writers voice and this is his most magnificent effort in my opinion. It is not marred by the melodrama of other works or the sheer tawdriness (exploited by film makers) often associated with his 1950's productions.

I wanted to address this to the reviewers here who thought this piece was somehow dated. It isn't. This is a play about artists, nonconformists and freaks. It's about those of us who don't ... Read More:

VHS : Moses (1996) (2pc)
Not only is Ben Kingsley a great actor, he brings the character of Moses alive biblically and physically! "The Lord has spoken!" is by far my favorite line. Don't miss the also very touching 'manna from heaven' scene. Brillant!

Jason and the ArgonautsI enjoyed Greek Mythology as a child and it was wonderful to have it all come to life. I felt as though I was living the adventure with them and it was very interesting to see how they handled some aspects of the myth. I really enjoyed the fulm and it will be one of my favourites. You could join me and have some fun.

VHS : Mummies and The Wonders of Ancient Egypt
Why are cable documentaries so inferior to PBS documentaries?

Every aspect of this documentary is second-rate - from the soundtrack to the stock footage to the writing. In the first episode, mummy footage is non-stop and disgusting. Actor voice-overs of Egyptian cult texts are creepy, often poorly placed, and outright maddening. The writing wanders all over the place and jumbles up the history of ancient Egypt into a mass of hyperbole and useless trivia - it's practically impossible to follow as coherent history.

For teachers, do not buy this for your classes - ... Read More:
