VHS : Love Letter (1998)
Growing up with Somewhere in Time (Collector's Edition), I was intrigued by Hallmark Hall of Fame's Love Letter, based on a haunting 1959 short story by Jack Finney. Scott Corrigan is a Civil War buff who designs Civil War simulation games (check out the 1998 computer graphics!). One day as he and his fiancee Debra are shopping for a vintage wedding gown, he discovers an antique desk and it's love at first sight, even though he can't really afford it. Scott's also a restorer in his spare time, so ... Read More:

VHS : Bonnie & Clyde
As our nation teeters on the brink of what may be another Great Depression, it's poignant to look back on the last one. This movie was visually beautiful and artistically ground breaking, but the real story was much richer and darker.

They did not meet when Clyde was trying to steal Emma Parker's car; they met at a gathering of mutual friends and relatives when Bonnie was out of work.

Clyde was not gay or impotent, but an accomplished Cassanova who had serveral girlfriends, ... Read More:

It has been a very long overdue to release this remarkable movie in DVD. A great film and very moving performance by Joanne Woodward (among her best performances along with her work in Sybil).

VHS : Looking for Richard
I've always caught this movie on cable whenever I could, as it's a great treatment of the art of acting and the play itself. Pacino takes us on a journey not only through the play, but also through Manhattan as he drums up interest in seeing the play at a Shakespearian Festival. Here we hear from erudite panhandlers as well as learned experts on Shakespear and famous Shakespearian actors. We also see him going through the city looking for locations to film his version of the play, settling on The Cloisters, the museum, ... Read More:

VHS : I Never Sang for My Father
I watched "I Never Sang for my Father" for the first time today and it surprized me that I hadn't seen it before. This is an excellent movie that deals with a real issue in many families. The issue is adult father/son relationships and how individuals involved handle their changing roles. The roles don't need to transpose themselves although this sometimes happens as parents reach advanced age. What ideally needs to happen is that love and respect would mature along with father and son. In this way authority would evolve into encouragement ... Read More:

There are so many better things to do with your time than watch this movie. But how often do you get the opportunity to see Stephen Sondheim act? Rarely, so it's worth it just for that.

Set in summer, 1933, in the depths of the Depression, Arthur Miller's most personal and intimate play focuses on the workers in a warehouse, a grim place in which men and women work for small wages and are grateful for the work. Appearing at the beginning of this production to set the scene, Miller observes that the Civil War and the Depression were the only times in American history in which the whole country was in the same boat-"You could not do a single thing that you wanted to do because no one had any money." The warehouse, he notes, became a grotesque ... Read More:

Personally, I wasn't impressed with the flow of the movie. Barbara, of course, was superior even in her early career.

I found the movie difficult to follow.

If you don't have anything to do...watch it and prove me wrong.
