VHS : Sullivan's Travels
This is a wonderful film which was the basis for O'Brother, Where Art Thou? by the Coen Brothers years later. A wealthy film director decides that his comedies are trivial and he must make an "important" film about the lowest classes in the United States. He poses as a hobo and travels California to get to know the lowest classes, at one point meeting Veronica Lake. His lark takes a turn towards reality when he loses his money and ID and ends up truly living the life of a hobo including time on ... Read More:

VHS : I Live My Life
"I Live My Life" is one of Joan's very best love stories from the 1930's. Joan plays Kay Bently, a socialite who tries to make a relationship with an archaeologist. I really like this movie because although it is similar to those typical love-story/love-triangles that MGM/Joan did, it also seems unique and very original. The performances by all are second to none. This movie came out 4 months after Joan's other picture from 1935, the hard-to-find, "No More Ladies."

5.Shall We Dance (1937) starring: Fred Astaire, Ginger Rogers, Edward Everett Horton, Eric Blore, Jerome Cowan

VHS : Shall We Dance (1937)
By the time of "Shall We Dance", the 7th outing of Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers, Rogers had become a star in her own right. The Gershwins wrote a great score which sustains the film but there is a sense of deja vu about the script and the supporting players which was reflected in the box office at the time. After the classy peak of "Swingtime", "Shall We Dance" was the inevitable anti-climax. Also, there is less dancing which might have been simply because of Roger's availability.

For me, the highlights are ... Read More:

7.Laurel & Hardy: Swiss Miss starring: Stan Laurel, Oliver Hardy, Grete Natzler, Walter Woolf King, Eric Blore

VHS : Laurel & Hardy: Swiss Miss
Producer Hal Roach makes the regrettable error of shoehorning Laurel and Hardy into a romantic musical that looks like a Jeanette MacDonald-Nelson Eddy reject. Fortunately, "Swiss Miss" (1938) includes some of Stan and Ollie's most memorable scenes - highlighted by their surreal encounter with a gorilla on an Alpine suspension bridge. Skip the dreadful songs and you will have a good time.

With all the cr@# they release on DVD these days it's a crime not to have these magnificent movies restored PROPERLY and released on DVD. Both collections are outstanding. Who could ever tire of this glamorous and talented pair. PLEASE! I beg for both sets to be released on DVD and restored with the respect these films deserve.

VHS : Top Hat
With the nation in the midst of economic ruin, who were better at lifting our spirits and making us smile? Why, Fred and Ginger, of course. I've got a feeling we'd better start watching their old movies again.

Is Top Hat better than Swing Time? People have been staking out their positions for years. Me, I think both represent the height of the Astaire-Rogers magic, all wrapped up in some of the greatest songs ever written for Hollywood movies and with incomparable choreography and dancing. So I just flip a coin to decide...but I make sure I ... Read More:

VHS : The Gay Divorcee
"The Gay Divorcee" is the second film in the Fred Astaire/Ginger Rogers canon and the first to star them together as the leads. Based on Astaire's Broadway success, the film is a superbly mounted showcase and the precursor of what was to come. Here are some of the highlights:

- Cole Porter's "Night and Day" was the only song retained from the stage musical. It is justly famous for Astaire's seduction of Rogers to dance, worth seeing also for the look on her face at the end. Also, Astaire's superb ability with a song, his interpretation of the ... Read More:
