VHS : Student Prince (1954)
I was dragged to this movie as a young boy. What young man wants to see a movie with a singing prince and a love story? It didn't take long for me to enjoy the story of male bonding by singing and drinking in the beer garden soon to be followed by a sword fight.
I can almost imagine myself serenading the beautiful and sexy barmaid (Ann Bylthe), especially with the flawless voice from GOD(Mario Lanza) lip-synced to near perfection by the prince(Edmund Purdom).
All this plus an arrogant ... Read More:

VHS : Green Dolphin Street
"Green Dolphin Street" is one of those cheesefests of Hollywood's Golden Age that has slipped into obscurity. At least "Black Narcissus",the camp classic, has its own Criterion Edition. Why NOT the love triangle set in New Zealand, with its needlessly complicated plot and Lana Turner in her fantastical outfits?

"Green Dolphin Street" is all about two sisters who live on the Channel Islands between England and France. There's the good girl, Marguerite (Donna Reed), and the bad grrrrl Marianne (Lana Turner). They're ... Read More:

VHS : Undercurrent (1946)
The first thing that came to my mind as I was watching this movie was "How in the world did Katharine Hepburn get this role?" She did a great job, as usual, but this was definitely a Joan Fontaine role. Joan Fontaine shines in this type of movie. Katharine Hepburn just fits so much better in her roles as a strong, independent woman, than a scared (supposedly) and timid young woman.
Katharine Hepburn plays Ann Sheridan, the smart daughter of a scientist (this part actually reminded me of some of her other roles), who falls in love with ... Read More:

VHS : Keys of the Kingdom
Gregory Peck, the supposedly inept priest becomes the kindly Christ-like spiritual shepherd to a group of Chinese peasants and is finally recognized for what he is in the last reel. It's a familiar formula, one Ingrid Bergman did with a larger screen, and color to boot, in "Inn of the Sixth Happiness." They are wholesome, they are touching, they even bring a tear to the eye. But unfortunately they are so predictable. Hollywood has always gone for the wholesome and the touching and the spiritually uplifting, knowing perhaps that audiences wouldn't ... Read More:

VHS : Pride and Prejudice
Having read the book (one of my favorites), I just can't stomach this film. What really turned me off was the depiction of Lady Catherine. In the book, that character is never reconciled to the marriage of Darcy and Elizabeth. And where did they get the idea for the archery scene? Certainly not from the book. If you haven't read the book, you might find it entertaining; but for anyone who loves the book, this film just doesn't do it justice.

I have the BBC version and the A&E version. I have not seen the version made this century. Of ... Read More:

I caught this on Turner Classic Movies the other day and discovered that it was a classic screwball comedy. It's really very witty, well-constructed, and amusing. Loretta Young plays a part that might have been assigned to, say, Carol Landis. And Milland is doing something that Cary Grant made famous. Both stars handle their parts superbly. Gail Patrick, perhaps for the first and only time in her long movie career, plays an air-head other woman. Add this to your list of must-see movies, especially if you like the screwball genre. Great fun for adults.
