VHS : The Uninvited
One of the things which makes this film so remarkable is the script, as other reviewers have noted. Perhaps the humour and pacing might be better understood if it were realised that Dodie Smith scripted the movie -- the writer to I Capture the Castle and The 101 Dalmatians. She was living in the States at the time to escape the bombing of England during WW2, and this was one of her projects. An amazing script, performed brilliantly by the likes of Ray Milland, Ruth Hussey and the radiant (and ultimately ... Read More:

VHS : The Homecoming
This is simply a wonderful production that will fill you with warmth every Christmas.

The actors are all first rate, with Patricia Neal, Richard Thomas, the late great Cleavon Little, and William Windom doing a phenomenal job.

I know it sounds cliche,' but they just don't make 'em like this anymore.

I watch this right around the 22nd or 23rd every year with a fire going and it never fails to move me.

Get this while it is still in active print...it is simply a wonderful ... Read More:

VHS : Catered Affair
Dreary settings, dreary story, dreary moralistic ending. Bette Davis attempts a lower-class New York Irish accent, with little success, and there is absolutely no chemistry between her and Ernest Borgnine, doing a rehash of his Marty role with a bitter edge. Debbie Reynolds in a non-comic role is surprisingly good, but also unconvincing as the poor daughter of a cab driver. Barry Fitzgerald provides a much-needed spark of life, and, of course, is the only one with a convincing characterization. The story wraps up conveniently ... Read More:

VHS : I Never Sang for My Father
I watched "I Never Sang for my Father" for the first time today and it surprized me that I hadn't seen it before. This is an excellent movie that deals with a real issue in many families. The issue is adult father/son relationships and how individuals involved handle their changing roles. The roles don't need to transpose themselves although this sometimes happens as parents reach advanced age. What ideally needs to happen is that love and respect would mature along with father and son. In this way authority would evolve into encouragement ... Read More:

In the 1920s, the biggest name on Broadway was Flo Ziegfeld, whose staple (but by no means his only claim to fame) was an annual review called the "Ziegfeld Follies." The "Follies" offered the biggest names in variety and acres of scantily-clad, beautiful girls. His great rival was Errol Carrol who produced a similar show called the "Varieties." Carroll couldn't match Ziegfeld's star power but he offered more girls and even less clothing.

The market crash of 1929 was the beginning of the end for the two Broadway titans. Ziegfeld, ... Read More:

VHS : Rodgers & Hammerstein's Cinderella (1957 Television Production)
How can anyone not love Julie Andrews? While the 1964 version with Leslie Ann Warren is by far the best version, this rare treat from 1957 is a must-see for anyone who loves the theatre, Cinderella or Julie Andrews. Listening to Ms. Andrews sing the work of Rodgers and Hammerstein is a treat in itself. The cast does a great job, and watching this 'live' performance is a reminder of days gone by. A great experience and well worth your money. Do yourself a favor...buy this DVD, soak in the talent which is Julie Andrews and a fine cast, and have yourself a "lovely night". ... Read More:
