| This is indeed the very best film version of Robert Louis Stevenson's definitive pirate adventure ever made. Christian Bale plays the young Jim Hawkins and Charlton Heston is Long John Silver, and both are excellent. Add Christopher Lee as Blind Pew and the rest of a terrific cast including Oliver Reed, Clive Wood, and Julian Glover among the many actors that bring the story to life. | First, the stars. No, not the astrologer's stars, the movie stars, goofy! Some of those high priced people can act! Of course, I'm in luck in that I see so few Hollywood movies that I don't recognize them, so it's easy to suspend disbelief. The one I did recognize was Stanley Tucci, the star of Big Night. | This is an incredible movie to watch especially as a mother. We watch this movie once a year around Ash Wednesday and I have done this since my kids were 1 and 3 and are now 14 and 16. At one time my younger son was so sad and engrossed with the movie he wanted a "dream catcher" so the thought of the awful things seen as a mother of a child who was tortured so would just go away.
